B.C., UK SIGN MOU TO CREATE OLYMPIC ECONOMIC LEGACIES

VANCOUVER – The Province and the United Kingdom government have signed a memorandum of understanding to help each other develop economic legacies associated with hosting an Olympic and Paralympic Games, announced Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen.

Hansen signed the memorandum of understanding today at the Province of British Columbia’s 2010 Business Summit with Lord Digby Jones, United Kingdom Minister of State for Trade and Investment.

“The signing of this MOU will help establish a working relationship between B.C. and the UK that will allow us to draw on each other’s experiences in maximizing Olympic-related economic benefits,” said Hansen. “The United Kingdom already has many initiatives underway that will be beneficial to our province, and B.C. has a number of valuable programs in place the UK can use to help them prepare for 2012.”

Under the agreement, the Province – through the B.C. Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat – will share information on programs for maximizing trade development and investment for the 2010 Games, host trade missions from the UK and create matching opportunities for companies located in B.C. and the UK through the 2010 Business Network.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Government will help to develop business links between both parties by hosting trade missions from British Columbia, facilitate networking events for B.C. and UK companies to encourage partnerships and investment, and promote 2010 Winter Games related business opportunities.

“The exclusive club of Olympic countries can learn together how to meet the challenge of converting Olympic magic into business success. The race starts now and the clock is ticking,” said Lord Digby Jones. “Any city or country that has passed the Olympic challenge will be much more appealing for a global business looking to expand. It is a fantastic advert.”

City Council voted yesterday to give a modest amount of money toward the Olympic Torch celebration. A few of the left-leaning Councillors approved but voiced concern about giving money when social issues are of prime importance. They acknowledged, however, the economic spinoff, goodwill and community spirit that these events generate, with Councillor Chandler, for instance, mentioning how important it was for us "as a species to celebrate our human form".

What should Victoria do? Start saving money to pay for the whole thing when the party's over...
