A proposal to replace the aging Admiral Inn on Belleville Street with an eight-storey condominium is expected to be contentious when it goes to public hearing Thursday.

If approved by the city, a 30-unit condominium would replace the 33-unit, woodframe inn at 257 Belleville St. The project is being proposed by Calgary resident Bill Demcoe, who represents 64 Canadian investors. But in order to move ahead, the site needs a change from the existing transient accommodation zone to allow for residences and an increase in the allowable density.

People are concerned that a 30 unit condo building replacing a 33 unit hotel may have traffic issues...

Why is this even being talked about? This is such a tiny building with large hotels for neighbours, Victoria drives me insane.

Those were my thoughts, too.

Traffic, height, human scale, all the usual stuff was bound to come out.

The density is too high but the amenities package is too low to justify the switch from hotel to residential. They should lower the density but increase the amenities package.

Motels don't generate vehicle traffic whereas condominiums do. Everybody knows that.

etc.

When you propose a large building, people complain that it's too big and doesn't do enough for the common good. When you propose a small building, people complain that it's too big and doesn't do enough for the common good.

This was approved by a 6-1 vote last night in favour (Madoff was the dissenting vote).

OOoohh, thanks for the update, I was about to ask.

I suppose the hotel will run through the summer.

I suppose it is going to block her view of something, somewhere as she drives by in her car.

For the sake of the future of this city, I implore all eligible VV members to remove this woman from Council once and for all come November. She has been an "albatross around neck" of our city for far too long.

Well, seeing that GreatScaper posted these publicly on SSP and Flickr I assume they're safe to post here:

Wow, that's some crazy @ss sh*t!! Love it!! Bring it on!

This would have been so much better.

Victoria always ends up with either nothing, or a water downed version of something much more interesting.

True in many instances, but I think this will end up being a nice enough little building when all is said and done. The powers-that-be just don't want anything to stand out.

Last Pictures of the Admiral:

In 2008 a group of architects got together and designed a post-modern condominium unit that was designed to replace this inn. Local residents immediately became incensed with the infusion of such starkly modern architecture to be mixed in with the lovely heritage architecture that is prevalent in the immediate area...

Your reminiscing got me thinking about our wonderful family vacations and the hotels we stayed in over the years. Sad when things beautiful buildings get torn down.

Cathy Ross says:"Sad when things beautiful buildings get torn down..."

Poor Cathy, it would seem she doesn't get out much if she holds the Admiral Inn in such high esteem. I suspect even a fleeting glimpse of the Taj Mahal or the Eiffel Tower might be too much for her.

I also would of preferred the pyramid type building on that location. It would of a least given some interest to our skyline, which is basically a large rectangle when you look at it from the harbour.

Really what's wrong with something with a crown, or heaven forbid, something that does NOT have a flat room as a finish?

I question the old inn's "beauty" but still I have fond memories of the motels we visited when I was a kid on holiday with my family. I doubt the cheap motel across the street from Disneyland in 1976 is still there. I lament the sad sight of the boarded up Crystal Court motel and the loss of economy accomodations just steps from one of the world's great urban harbours.

But what made that harbour great was not sheepishly understated buildings, it was bold, grand architectural statements.

^^ I have to agree. There is absolutely now "beauty", to that hotel at all. We seem to have a love afair with recreating that type of building all over town. Looks way to much like the new townhomes at the corner of Lamps and ESQ Rd, the current ones being built across the street from the Legion, and other SFD to MFD quick infill projects all over the city (seems if you don't want to offend a council, just use the Admirals Inn as a template for your infill project). To make it even less offensive remove all ornamentation.

I think the pyramid building would be fantastic … Oh! Couldn’t have that in Victoria … remember, tourists don’t come here to look at the buildings … … groan.

When I look across the harbour at that area ... all I see is empty space ...

From pyramid to predictable

Plans call for the Admiral Inn & Suites to be demolished in favour of an eight-storey, 35-unit apartment building.

Low,  ridiculously generic,  brick.  Victoria will love it.
