Too bad Victoria can't be bothered to take any inspiration from it.
I would love to see the causeway extended north to ~Capital Iron and west to ~Laurel Point.

Anyways, the chances of redeveloping Ogden Point into a showpiece are as likely as Victoria's airport taking over Vancouver's. This region lacks the leadership to pull off something worthy of national (forget about international) headlines.

A-Channel story
http://www.atv.ca/vi...news_67794.aspx"Dolphins" en route to help tourists play in Victoria
VICTORIA - We're just a few weeks away from another record-setting cruise ship season in Victoria.
Holland America's MS Amsterdam ties up in just over three weeks, the first of 215 ships to visit between April and October.
With an estimated economic impact of nearly $150 million per season, cruise ships are big business, and the ships themselves are getting bigger.
With two weeks to an election call, the province is making the Ogden Point Cruise Ship terminal a little richer, and a lot more competitive: with a commitment of $1.5 million towards the construction of offshore moorings piles, or 'dolphins'.
Like the mammals they're named after, dolphins are smart because they extend and improve the use of a dock without extending the dock itself.
Instead, a jetty embedded into the sea floor sits on top of the water, allowing massive vessels to moor further out.
That means the next generation of larger, longer cruise ships will find a home here in Victoria.
The stakes are high: 17 per cent of cruise ship traffic to BC stops in the capital. That works out to just under four hundred thousand visitors to Ogden Point last year.
But compare that to the 835,000 who visited the Port of Seattle in 2008, or the 850,000 who decided to disembark and spend their money in Vancouver.
The entire project will cost $4.5 million which means the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority still has to beg the federal government for its share.

But compare that to the 835,000 who visited the Port of Seattle in 2008, or the 850,000 who decided to disembark and spend their money in Vancouver.
You could say Victoria is doing rather well if a city the size of Seattle is getting slightly more than twice the number of visitors.
I always find it interesting, these comparisons. It makes perfect sense that Victoria should have an arena befitting a city of 100,000 people, whereas it also makes perfect sense that Victoria should be getting the same amount of cruise ship traffic as a city of 3.5 million.
I think I just came up with a new tourism slogan: Victoria - It's whatever you want it to be.

Port wants to host larger cruise ships; province grants $1.5 million
By Andrew A. Duffy, Times Colonist

Ogden Point is another step closer to being able to handle the next generation of cruise ship thanks in part to a $1.5-million cheque from the provincial government.
The money will be used to fund the construction of a $4.5 million mooring pile, or dolphin, at Ogden Point. It will allow the piers to handle new, larger cruise ships which could mean an economic boon for the city.
"It's critical for Ogden Point that it can handle the ships of today and the future, and this is a very important part of that," said Don Prittie, chairman of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority.
The dolphin will be anchored to the sea bed 70 metres off the end of Pier B at Ogden Point.

Vancouver's loss next year expected to benefit Victoria area
By Carla Wilson, Times Colonist
April 1, 2009
Victoria's Ogden Point is anticipating another record-breaking number of cruise ship visits in 2010 even though the global financial crisis is forcing operators to rework their sailing plans.
The final figure isn't known yet, said Paul Servos, CEO of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority. Most of the luxurious cruise ships arriving in Victoria every year ply the B.C. coast on their way to and from Alaska. This year is expected to see 215 visits, a new record.
Next year's schedules are still "fairly fluid," Servos said yesterday.

Published: April 07, 2009 12:16 PM
The province will sink $1.5 million to allow the “next generation” of cruise ship to call at Ogden Point.
The money will pay for one-third of the $4.5-million project to place an offshore dolphin mooring pile at the port. The mooring will extend the berthing ability of the pier without extending the pier itself. With the mooring in place, cruise ships up to 350 metres can call into port.
The rest of the funding will come from the federal government and the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, which oversees operation of the pier.

Court sides with boat business
Ogden Point company wins lease rollback, but fight may not be over yet
By Sandra Mcculloch, Times Colonist
July 17, 2009
A complex legal fight concluded in B.C. Supreme Court this week with a boat repair and sales facility getting a break, at least temporarily, on a stiff lease hike with the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority.
Marine Masters Holdings Ltd., doing business as Mercury Sales and Service and located at 89 Dallas Rd. succeeded in its court action against the harbour authority.
The plaintiff said the decision keeps the bare-land lease for the property at $45,000 instead of the $140,000 sought by GVHA.

Housing will not be an option at the 30-hectare terminal site

A master plan mapping out the future of Ogden Point won't likely be finished until late next year but the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority's CEO is already saying it will not include housing.
"This is a port property," Paul Servos said yesterday. "We are looking at the highest and best use as it fits with our mandate and vision as a harbour organization."
Residential construction is not being considered, he said.

The plan would not include specific building designs or locations, he said.
Proposals are to be submitted by July 31. The harbour authority's evaluation committee will examine them and plans to make a recommendation for a proponent to the board of directors at its Aug. 21 meeting, Servos said.
Any news here?
I was at Ogden Pt. today, it actually looks a lot nicer than it did 2 years ago, it's be prettied up quite a bit.
Disney to use Vancouver as home port for Alaska-bound cruise ships
By Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun
September 11, 2009 1:02 PM
VANCOUVER - The announcement Friday that Disney Cruise Line will use Vancouver as a home port for 18 Alaska cruises in 2011 comes as a shot in the arm for Port Vancouver, which has experienced a drop in cruise line business.
Between May 3 and Aug. 30, 2011, Disney Cruise Line will make 18 seven-night sailings from Vancouver, expecting to bring 100,000 passengers through the city.
Robin Silvester, president and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver, welcomed the news at a time when port traffic has dropped due to the economy.
Silvester said the port expects a 30 per cent drop in passengers in 2010, a total of 600,000 cruise line passengers. Prior to the recession, the port would handle one million passengers.
The Disney Alaskan cruise will visit Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.
Disney will also run a five- and six-night cruise from Los Angeles to Vancouver and Vancouver to Los Angeles, with stops in San Francisco and Victoria.
