Who ya gonna call? Paranormal devotees stalk Victoria's ghosts
Tom McMillan, Times Colonist

If you see a ghost don't worry, chances are someone is chasing it.
More than 60 ghost hunters, psychics and paranormal enthusiasts from throughout North America are at the International Got Ghosts Conference, a three-day lecture series offering industry updates for paranormal veterans and how-to tips for newcomers.
"There's a lot of scam artists out there," said event co-ordinator Lisa Reyna. "We're offering advice for beginners and a chance to learn from the best."
The conference, held at the Chateau Victoria, features lecture topics like identifying authentic haunting evidence and how to communicate with spirits.
Reyna said interest in spirit activity has soared over the past five years as stigmas around believing in ghosts has faded.
"There was a time I wouldn't even tell people I'm a ghost hunter," she said. "Now there's a real strong interest in the paranormal around this area."
Indeed, with Victoria's plethora of old buildings, hunters say the city is littered with potential hauntings. The conference examined Ross Bay Cemetery and Hatley Castle last night. It will explore the Old Burying Ground which is now Pioneer Square, Maritime Museum and St. Ann's Academy this evening.
Investigators carry a variety of equipment when ghost hunting, including infrared cameras, sound recorders and frequency scanners. Veterans say rapid drops in temperature, disruption of magnetic fields and random flashes of light often indicate a spirit's presence.
Whether the conference's evening trips will find anything depends on who you ask. Some attendees eagerly expect to spot a ghost, but many experienced hunters never see one, said Patrick Burns, a Georgia-based paranormal technology expert.
"They rarely reveal themselves to people directly," said Burns, who believes he's seen several ghosts." And with evidence you have to take a skeptical, analytical approach."
Merlyn Ahern, a Seattle-based psychic, said apparitions look exactly like living people, only more pale and prone to sudden disappearances.
"They look as solid as you and I," Ahem said. " You'll look right at them and all of a sudden they fizzle away."
One topic the conference will not discuss is how to remove unwanted ghosts. Reyna said seekers only identify and communicate with spirits. "Most people just want it explained and to know what it is," she said. "They want to know they're not going crazy."

Investigators are clueless as to the meaning behind this mysterious apparition seen in the old Cherry Bank Hotel.
With that face, could be any one of several beautiful people that are no longer with us. Marilyn Monroe comes to mind, or maybe Audrey Hepburn.

There are no ghosts.
Amen to that. There can be no ghosts since humans are no more than chemicals and electrical energy. That energy disapates to the cosmos at death. Anything more than this is about as believable (and provable) as Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny. Amusing enough as tales, but with ZERO basis in fact. For those who want to flame me on my "theory", show me irrefutable scientific evidence to prove me wrong.
