A friend sent me this one today via email: trust those crazy Russians.

You know exactly how this is going to sideways from the start of the video and you think "no way!" But yep crazy-ass Russian does it - without further delay let me present "hand grenade fishing, Russian-style":

My experience with grenades is that you throw them ...not drop them.

Yes but *my* experience with fishing is that you use a rod and reel and tackle - not hand grenades :). Speaking of a different kind of fishing on my recent Nova Scotia trip went out with the cousins to fish for striped bass; big bastards some of them well over 25-30 pounds.

Different fishing than I am used to. Basically you bait two hooks - with barbs, no restrictions in NS, interestingly enough unlike in BC - with mackerel strip, about 16 inches apart with the second hook maybe tied two feet from the end of the line, where you have a 3 ounce weight tied on the very end. Cast, let the weight and bait sink to the bottom, anchor your rod in a makeshift rod holder buried in the sand, sit, drink LOTS of beer, wait for the strike, reel in the fish....

Well back in the day the navy would get some pretty fine vittles by letting a depth charge go. Then they went to the damn ASROC's and it was too expensive to go fishing anymore.

How come we have "catch and release" sport fishing, but not really for any other type of "hunting"?

Why shouldn't I be able to catch, say, eagles or seagulls, or marmots, deer, racoons etc. for sport, as long as I release them afterwards?

We have catch and release of humans all the time...it's a great sport followed by millions and it makes the headlines every day.

The CRD used to publish information on the Gorge Bridge herring regs; if you fish for herring or any other species in the Gorge Waterway (or Portage Inlet), you will need to get a tidal water fishing licence from the DFO which you can do quickly and painlessly online from their site or buy one from a local marina and certain gas stations for that matter.

/\....dunno LJ last time I purchased a fishing license from anywhere other than the DFO site was the Petro Can station on the Colwood strip - and they haven't carried licenses in years. Perhaps you can get them @ CT but I've never asked so not sure.....

I would just take a drive by the Craigflower bridge and see if anyone is fishing.

Usually it's from late February to early March, but the run might be early this year.

Last year it was hot February 22, from this Chek news story.

http://www.cheknews.ca/144361-144361/

Some of my best memories are fishing by the Tillicum bridge with bamboo poles you picked up in Chinatown.

You couldn't find a spot on the rocks with everyone fishing.  Don't see many people with the bamboo poles anymore.  I guess those old timers are all gone.

If you fish for herring or any other species in the Gorge Waterway or Portage Inlet, you will need to get a tidal water fishing licence from the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Licences are available province-wide from more than 400 vendors, including sporting goods stores, resorts, service stations, marinas, charter boat operators and department stores.

I posted this the other day in the "Malls" thread but even more apropos here; we managed to hit the Bass Pro 'shop' (all 80,000 s/f of it!) in Tsawaassen Mills mall last weekend. If you're into fishing and happen to be on the mainland - go. Its well worth the effort, the selection of gear and especially prices on lures/reels/rods etc., were excellent much to my surprise, as that was contrary to what I'd heard initially.

Most interestingly the first two weeks of March is an inventory blow out sale including an innovative program where they will accept older reels as trade in, the value of which can be applied against the purchase of a new reel.

Hey ASE, is the Bass Pro store connected to Cabela's?

They look identical.

OK they were different but now they are the same company.

Amazing what $5.5B can buy.

Yes sorry Sparky I took a few hours out to get back to my real life :) - as you've figured out by now B-P bought Cabela's which incidentally means the Nanaimo Cabela's outlet is effectively under the B-P corporate umbrella. If you go to the BP store grab one of their glossy flyers, definitely worthwhile to the serious fisherman.

No grenades, no depth charges either. Although as I'm not a hunter I can't vouch for whatever they might offer in that department.

Prices for their fishing lures were scary/real good - on average $5.99 per unit vs $8.99 at my usual local go-to place on Douglas Street. That makes a huge difference to your pocketbook if you're out in the back country more than a day and night, since losing lures is a common occurrence especially if fishing an unfamiliar river system. Also some high end carbon fibre spin-cast and angling rods like Fenwick were as much as 20-25% less expensive than here.

So the next fishing adventure for our posse will be the Vedder River which runs into and feeds the Chilliwack River. Its a hot spot for various salmoid species, steel-head uppermost among them. Has anyone on VV fished the Vedder? If so any feedback is welcome as this will be new for all of our group.

Looks like a fabulous ecosystem:
