A lot of packaging is very wasteful it seems. Far more packaging seems used than necessary for a lot of goods. Thankfully Amazon stopped sticking my boxes of diapers inside of other boxes... usually.

it could also be in part that canada post frowns upon packaging that are not plain brown/white.. packaging with imagery on it and words and labels.. i remember years ago standing behind someone in line having their package denied because of what it was packaged in

I’ve been watching for hours in the background montages of single stream recycling something about it: https://youtu.be/5YaTpL8nl7c

The solution seems to be to eventually eliminate the amount of non-biodegradable packaging and products that we use, which requires utilizing massive amounts of paper unless somebody comes up with some sort of rapidly compostable plastic-y product that breaks down into inert compounds in the environment.

I guess we better cut down the trees before they get taken out by forest fires?

I had an earth and ocean sciences prof at UVic say this problem would persist until bacteria evolved to be able to eat plastic (this was circa 2006-ish).

They are already available....

I got a box from Amazon the other day with an ad for a pickup truck printed on it.

Unfortunately, the uptake by companies has been too slow. Most do not seem willing to use these willingly, so we will likely have to force them through legislation.

Most existing international standards require biodegradation of 60% within 180 days along with certain other criteria for the resin or product to be called compostable.

As per one of the links above, this is the reason why industry will likely never adopt this form of packaging. It self destructs, meaning the volume of repackaging or tampered goods concerns would be monumental when it can take 2-6 months just to receive a product from its point of shipment, let alone between the point of shipment and production.

I guess I can stop separating my recyclables and just throw everything in the big green dumpster in my building's parking garage.

Changes to China’s importation rules mean there’s virtually no market for some of the material collected through commercial or multi-family residential recycling programs, and it’s increasingly ending up in the landfill...

It took about 25 years to come to the realization that shipping refuse away doesn't mean that refuse disappears. What else are we going to look back upon in 25 years and shake our heads at?

so the issue is high contamination in multi family collections. otherwise known as “renters don’t care” or “i don’t care where I put my garbage/recycling if I don’t get caught”. ie. once it’s in a communal bin nobody can be sure who put it in the wrong bin.

is there no way to force better sorting at the source (at the building or complex) or at a local transfer station or at the dump?

Colin Savage, a Love Where You Live volunteer, said he stashed thousands of butts in the bushes in anticipation of the event, only to find them stolen.

Oh, I didn't know about that express service.

Unless I ran a restaurant or bar I would be embarrassed if people knew I drank enough to require a commercial account with invoicing for my empties.

You can get a case of 12 water bottles for under three dollars from Amazon. https://www.amazon.c...=gateway&sr=8-7

I’d be embarrassed if people didn’t know I got my eight glasses a day!

Edit: ^think that’s before the deposit

GFL is having an IPO on the TSX sometime in the fall.  That will be one stock to put on your watch list.
