Are we talking national brewer, or a local brewer with an established south Island presence?

Victoria is small fry for a national, just look at the new gargantuan Molson brewery out in Chilliwack. My bet is one of the downtown brewers is struggling with capacity.

When I see the surprising prominence of Phillips beers in Vancouver it makes me think it would be wise for them to have a plant on the lower mainland, rather than Sidney.

Driftwood will be launching the fruit of their new distillery later this year. I have no idea what they're making, but this early in the game I would imagine vodka or gin. The craft spirits market is sure chugging along!

I’d put money on them making canned cocktails, similar to what Victoria Spirits has done with their Strait and Narrow products, to get in on the same market as Nude and other hard soda beverages.

The market for these is super hot. We’ve recently taken over a store with a retail license attached and I cannot believe how crazy these products sell. It’s insane.

I think Philips trades on their local, small town image. I have heard a few times that their output puts them in the top 10 nationally. Big volume.

Omg I say that every single day, and three times a day this summer, lol.

I overheard someone say that “omggggg strait and narrows are life”, whatever that means, when I was unpacking the order this week. They bought three four packs and left.

Merridale Cidery and Distillery says it will be closed for one week after a staff member sold a bottle of cider to a minor.

The minor was involved in the “Minors As Agents” program*, established by the B.C. government in 2011. Under this program, the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch hires minors aged 16-to-18 to enter places that sell alcohol and try to purchase alcohol.

While trying to make the purchase, they are not permitted to lie.

Merridale Cidery and Distillery says this is its first infringement since it opened in 1990.

“As much as we regret this unfortunate moment, we are all human and understand that mistakes happen,” Merridale says in a Facebook post.

* more commonly referred to as "entrapment".  It's not legal for a minor to buy alcohol.  Yet this one did.  That seems more extreme than "lying".

Meanwhile, minors have easy access to body/mind altering chemicals in the form of artificial hormones every day in BC.

It is illegal to sell it to a minor.

Whatever happened to ‘if you look like you’re under 30, we’ll ID you?’

Employees get lazy.

It’s actually not “illegal” at least not for that employee. They face no discipline. Unless they can lose their serving certificate? Do you need one of those for a store?

Anyway, a minor does or at least should face more sanctions than the seller.

I do not think it is illegal for a minor to try to buy or buy liquor is it?  The illegal part is the seller...

If minors in B.C. are caught with liquor in their possession, if they are found inside a bar or pub or if they try to buy liquor using false ID, they may receive a $230 fine.

https://www.criminal...ve a $230 fine.

A long time ago I was pulled over by police and had a case of beer in my trunk. I was 18. One week before my 19th birthday. I had to go before a judge to get my $50 fine. After I had turned 19. I think I even pointed that out to the judge. But he wasn’t convinced to reduce my penalty.

The caveat is unless in the presence of an adult. Minors can even consume alcohol, as long as a parent provides it (obviously not at a bar or restaurant).

Right but this kid is ordering liquor in an restaurant (not a bar or pub) and not trying to use fake ID...  He is not in possession of anything just ordering the beer.  In these scenarios is the youth paying?

Presumably if they successfully buy liquor, they are then in possession. And thus eligible for the fine.

So maybe “try to buy” is not illegal, but “buy” is.

That's what these little agents are doing right?  They don't actually pay...
