Oak Bay Rotarians are renewing their Canada flag fundraiser for its ninth year.

Under the program, Rotarian volunteers install Canadian flags in celebration of Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day, collecting them after the weekends. The cost is $50.

Interested parties can email obrflags@gmail.com or visit oakbayrotary.ca for more information.

There are no in-person Canada Day celebrations planned for this year due to the pandemic, but that’s not stopping the City of Victoria from planning something for the country’s birthday.

The celebrations will consist of community-based performers – reflective of the region's cultural diversity – possibly a headliner act, and recorded content from previous Canada Day celebrations.

The City of Victoria is looking for a qualified event organizer to produce the 2021 Virtual Canada Day Celebration, much like last year's event.

I'd rather they just save the money until a proper event can be held. Virtual events blow.

But then they wouldn't be able to pay $65K to one of their buddies.

Victoria Cancels Virtual Canada Day Broadcast, Creates Event for Reflection Later This Summer
June 10, 2021

Today, Victoria City Council voted unanimously to change its plans for a virtual Canada Day broadcast. Instead, the City will produce a broadcast to air later this summer guided by the Lekwungen people and featuring local artists, that explores what it means to be Canadian, in light of recent events.

“As First Nations mourn and in light of the challenging moment we are in as a Canadian nation following the discovery of the remains of 215 children at a former Residential School, Council has decided to take the time to explore new possibilities, instead of the previously planned virtual Canada Day broadcast,” said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.

In their decision today, Council noted that while everyone will mark Canada Day in their own way on July 1, now is a time where the City can take leadership and provide an opportunity for thoughtful reflection and examination of what it means to be Canadian in light of recent events and what we already know from our past.

But like the Sir John A MacDonald statue, the rest of the country will follow in our footsteps.

TC has come out with an editorial opposing the cancellation of Canada Day.

Cancelling a streaming program that very few people watched last year is not "cancelling Canada Day."

Honest poll - how many people here even knew about the broadcast prior to it being cancelled?

Well if it was something that nobody watched or cared about then why make a big deal at council cancelling it?! Why refuse to answer the question as to whether this was permanent or only for this year?

The TC was right to raise this. If folks keep quiet then there will be no further Canada days and the progressive self hate will run unabated.

You might think that but I would lay odds that with a 2 week cancellation all of the artists are keeping their money.

Council made a thing out of cancelling it because they love virtue signaling. Lots of people made a big deal out of council's cancelling it because they love to find things about which to express outrage.
