I'd be screaming "hey, there's more to see and do here even in winter" if I were running that show.

We have a captive audience on the Island so why shouldn't we lure people to various parts of the Island outside of summer? People still love to get away for a night or two even in less than ideal weather (I know I do).

The employees must love this. Waiting all that time for work.

getting work then being laid off now being rehired.

Not sure I would be sitting around waiting .

They will get laid off next week on the arrival of the next pineapple express. By then it should not be front page new it will be in the crossword section

True but every day they are "open" is less credit they have to give season ticket holders next year. When you are trying to sell the business that is an important point.

Oh man, now CFAX is reporting that after multiple accidents on the access road today, due to too much snow, the road has been closed for at least the time being.  Sounds like that might leave some people stranded up there.

They can't win.

Please give some sort of up date on what the hell is going on down the roads Like ·  · 22 minutes ago near Merville

Mount Washington is facing more snow-related problems this weekend, although this time the mountain resort is getting more than they bargained for.

The mountain reopened on Thursday after closing last month due to a lack of snow. With snow in the forecast throughout the weekend, employees were back at work while skiers and snowboarders flocked to the mountain to take advantage of the fresh powder.

But a blizzard in Comox Valley Sunday afternoon caused multiple collisions on the Mount Washington Highway.

Wind Slab -Winds slabs formed by very strong to strong  SE winds will form over the next 48 hours.

Extra Caution in NW aspects is required. Open lee areas at treeline will also see wind slabs continuing to form due to the very high winds.

Snowpack  Summary:

Up to 120 cms of recent storm snow now overlies the Feb 10 facet layer. Within this 120 cms of new snow exists wind slabs that are ripe for ski triggering.  It is likely that avalanches that release within these wind-slabs will step down to the Feb 10 layer  resulting in large avalanches

These guys just can't get a break this year, can they. If the road conditions weren't enough to keep people from getting up there the threat of a avalanche just might.

No snow at all on the hill.   Wet this week, hope it's cold enough to become snow.

^ Boy, they had a thin season last year and this year looks kinda bleak at least for the start. 17 days till Christmas and they still have the lawnmower at the ready.

They need SNOW!

No kidding; if the long term prognosis for BC's climate is even remotely accurate - where we become more and more "California-like" with specifically warmer and wetter winters over the next 50-100 years - I don't think I will be investing in any ski operations any time soon and especially on the coast.

The forecast for today is warmer weather, wind, rain and a slim chance of pestilence. Keep your gumboots handy.

No doubt. No point in buying a seasons pass if the season is a month!

I wonder if ski operations are much of an 'investment' per se, in any case? The biggest company that I knew/know of, Intrawest, is in real estate, and uses(d?) a ski hill to attract property owners.
I know little of business, but I'd imagine, weather considerations aside, that the profit margins on a ski hill are pretty small, so I think that you'd run one as a labour of love of skiing, more than as a profit-driven enterprise.
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Generally speaking, ski resorts do not make real money off of the food vendors or lift tickets. It is all used to attracted people to purchase real estate.

When you think about it, if you were to purchase a small mom/pop ski resort or build your own land acquisition would quite a small part of your budget because land is so cheap, so you would invest what you would instead use in a higher profile area and build lifts, lodge etc.

Oversimplified I know haha, but as a rule of thumb.
