Sounds like his planned Broughton project with the two floors of curved glass.

Got it, right:

608 Broughton

http://charddevelopm...com/future.php#

608 Broughton is a landmark development site in the historic center of Victoria just three blocks from the Inner Harbour, Empress Hotel, seaplane terminal and steps from Government Street. In 2008 the property received a development permit for a unique 10 storey mixed-use building featuring a 2 storeys of curved glass faced penthouse units and a car elevator system – to be the first of its kind in Victoria. Marketing of this boutique luxury project is anticipated for 2010.

Car elevators are really cool. I was lucky enough to go to Japan in January, and they are a regular feature there. Essentially, you drove into this room from the street, and parked on the metal turntable. Your car is then turned to line up with the elevator, and the attendant drives it onto the lift. No platform, just two wheel troughs. Inside, there were about 5 storeys of cars stacked up, about 6 feet vertical per car. the cars were pretty much side-by side on a large loop going up into the building (kinda like the fairground ride "the Zipper") So in this case, there are six vertical rows of cars, three entrance doors at the bottom (You can see #2 and #3), and one exit onto the street.. (Make sense? Difficult to describe!) When you come to get your car back, the whole thing revolves until yours appears at the bottom, it is backed out onto the turntable, turned around, and off you go..

If it were up to me, there'd be no 'up' escalators anywhere in malls, just down ones. We North Americans wring our hands about increasing rates of obesity, and wonder why...
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

I read somewhere recently that North Van is considering a bike elevator:

Perhaps because shoppers are loaded with packages and cannot hold on to a handrail when going downstairs, a down escalator helps prevent lawsuits.

this is an interesting thread.  an earlier mention is made of a spiral escalator.  i think river rock in vancouver almost has something like that.  youtube https://youtu.be/Cc1TIYHjQSI

also look at this paternoster.  looks somewhat dangerous to the unskilled.  credit to tristin hopper on twitter for making me look this up.

I read somewhere that walk left, stand right rule on escalators is a waste of capacity (up to 50%!), so if you’re going to be walking all the way up or down anyway, use the fixed stairwell, it’ll probably be faster.

Wouldn't walking up an elevator while being elevated be significantly faster?

it seems to me that if both lanes (standing and walking) are full the capacity is actually slightly increased by the walkers in the left lane.  their per-minute throughput will be higher.  standing capacity is indeed reduced by 50% though.

When I lived in London, the escalators on the Underground moved a lot more people because on one side people walked.    It really made a difference and you could see the impact when someone stopped on the right side

The escalator from the parkade up to street level at Uptown close to Best Buy has been out of service for a while now.

I don't think I'll ever get accustomed to those first few uneven steps...

I scarcely believe there's been a full week since Uptown was completed that all the mechanical people moving devices on site have been fully functional at the same time.

Don’t they have an elevator for mobility frustrated folks like yourself?

Why don’t they have moving carpets like in airports in the downtown core? Great and fun way to get around.

The experiment was done, in fact, in London. Standing on both sides of the escalator was found to increase capacity by 30%. via NYT: https://www.nytimes....-escalator.html

It's largely due to two things. At lower volume times, fewer people walk up one side and the escalator capacity is therefore reduced by almost half. At higher volume times, the distance between two people walking is greater than between two people standing, usually one or two steps for those walking compared to no gap for those standing.

i always walk right behind the person in front of me. sometimes even touching slightly. like drafting to reduce energy consumption.

I try to leave a two stair difference in front and behind(usually doesn’t work out from behind) because of germs and most of the time the smells is unbearable with the water reduction fad. I’m serious.

I don’t really think we have an escalator capacity problem in Victoria? Which is why we don’t have any order?
