Their website still does not show Victoria having their own network. Until that happens, hard pass.

I guess it won't come online until they start selling local plans. They've been building wireless towers like crazy over the last couple of years.

Freedom Mobile chief Paul McAleese has confirmed expansion of the network to Victoria and Nanaimo in an interview with the Financial Post.

Still, Freedom has deployed enough spectrum to give customers in major cities an LTE experience. Next year, it plans to expand to Victoria and Nanaimo in B.C., Red Deer and Medicine Hat in Alberta, and to Belleville, Brockville, Cornwall and other towns along Highway 401 in Ontario. McAleese believes the additional 100 GB at LTE speeds will entice customers to the new offer.

Their network still needs improvement. There's currently too much "home/away" splattered throughout the region.

^ They've updated the coverage map (compared to the one posted above), and indicated some spots that will be turned on later this summer: https://www.freedommobile.ca/victoria

Having said that, I have no interest in switching. The pricing for the first 6 months is great, but after that it's actually worse than my current plan.

Yeah, I checked out the latest map and all throughout the region you have pockets where you're considered "away," meaning a partner network will pick up your call. I don't know if that costs you something or not, but the "away" network typically relegates you to the lowest rung of the ladder and you're last in line for data and first to have dropped calls.

it does mean what you think it means. The Freedom Mobile (Shaw) model is that you have a fairly cheap rate within the home zone, but an expensive rate outside that. Shaw saves on infrastructure costs as they only have to put up towers and antennae in urban areas and can leave the sparsely populated areas without coverage.

Bottom line: Great plans if you don't anticipate being outside of the major urban centres in Canada, not so great for a road trip.

Correct.   That's why I'm switching to Freedom and then cancelling shaw for Tekksavvy.   That way I can retain access to shaw go wifi and cut internet costs by 40%

Freedom reminds me of what Fido used to be in the early days - basic coverage in the city.

Fortunately I got in on that sweet Bell deal a little over a year ago, but I do know someone who could benefit from Freedom's local coverage.

What’s shocking to me is you’re “away” when at the casino, or at least gambling with your connection, lol.

I just switched to Lucky Mobile (Bell) from a corporate account.  I was paying too much for a plan that I barely use.  With Lucky Mobile, yes it is only 3G data but for someone like me that is mostly using WiFi anyway, I doubt I'll notice a difference.  Funnily enough, I now how more GB a month with Lucky than my corporate account for almost 1/2 the price.

Originally was going to go with Public Mobile (Telus), but where I bought the Sim card they only sold for Lucky Mobile.  The plans were exactly the same though, and Lucky uses Telus' infrastucture.

Was interesting doing the research and learning that all the major players (Telus, Bell, Rogers and now Shaw) have lower-cost pre-paid subsidaries.

Anyone tried Bell/Rogers/Telus retention to see what they are offering to prevent a move?

Bell/Rogers/Telus will not compete with freedom.  Not even Virgin/Fido/Koodo will.  That is what they made Lucky, Public, and Chatr for

Well, there was that one weekend back in 2017...

I signed up for notifications from Freedom in December and a few days ago was offered 10 gigs/month at 50% off for 6 months ($65 - 50% - $5 for doing auto-pay = $27.50) and a coupon code for 25% off for the remaining 18 months ($65 - 25% -$5 = $43.75). I’ll never need that much data but after a recent drop my old iPhone is slowly dying and Freedom will let me add an iPhone 8 or Galaxy S9 for just $10/month. Still running the numbers but may be hard to resist.

Wow! At $10/month that’s a sweet deal for the phone.

If you don’t need your phone for business and strong connectivity everywhere it’s a heck of a bargain even at $60/month.
