Wow what was that place in the late nineties? I can remember a fairly popular night club there. Then it was a gay friendly place for awhile too...

Visit my blog at: https://www.sidewalkingvictoria.com

It has a whole new look!

All through the 90's it was "The Karaoke Club", and it was very popular.

Paul Arsens was a true trendsetter in the restaurant and hotel industry in Victoria. The Motor Inn started with a family style restaurant named, you guessed it - Paul’s Restaurant in 1958. This was just one of many businesses this Ladysmith entrepreneur opened in Victoria. Shortly after the success of the restaurant, Paul and his wife Artie, decided that they would try their hand at a motor inn. So they set about building Paul’s Motor Inn with 78 rooms that would be attached to Paul’s Restaurant.

Paul was always up for doing something different and humourous - at times he would have his billboard advertising hung upside down or sideways to attract more attention. He once got international attention in the Boston Globe and New York Times by having restaurant guests decide what price they would pay for dinner, and even went so far as to have them ring in their own bills and make their own change!

No wonder we are such a unique and fun loving group.

Uncertain future.  Pauls Motor Inn is now one of the homeless hotels, and while the businesses (the restaurant, Copper Owl) have been invited to stay on I haven't heard what has come of this if anything.

The restaurant is done. Copper Owl hasn’t confirmed their intentions just yet.

I saw a large group drinking across the street the other day right along the sidewalk south of Paul’s, at 11AM on a weekday. The ambiance did not feel safe for passers by.

copper owl closed permanently on February 1. according to all their Facebook posts. With a couple weeks notice. So unless another operator took over before the plague there is no one running it.

Perhaps the CoV should close off the roads around Paul's. That aught to get business going.

Upstairs in the former Copper Owl lounge, Tim Siebert and Jessa Gildersleeve have opened Citrus and Cane lounge, which features art deco design, reflecting the history of the space, and ornate and colourful decor.

The lounge offers a wide range of tropically themed exotic drinks. Siebert said the goal is to create an atmosphere of escape from the everyday world. “We wanted to provide a new idea of drinking in Victoria,” he said.

The renovated lounge, with 50 seats, opened in mid-November, and Siebert said business has been good. He said there have been no problems with the adjacent social housing complex, operated under contract for the province. There is 24-hour security on site, provided by the province. “For us it has been totally fine.”

Gildersleeve and Siebert have leased the lounge since last January, closing until November to spruce up the location. “We put our life savings into a dream,” Siebert said.

Including the owners, the lounge has nine staff, and it’s open Thursday through Monday. When the pandemic crisis is over, the aim is to open daily with longer hours.

I wish them luck, but I'd never frequent an establishment adjacent to one of the local "instaslums".

the rest of the article talks abut red cedar taking over paul's.  i wonder if the situation with the past tenants was resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

red cedar is definitely benefitting from all the renovations the past tenant paid to put in.

Cliff Leir, owner of Paul’s Diner by For Epi, said debt of $85,000 is remaining out of $150,000 invested in renovating the rented location. That debt is “now weighing on the rest of the business.”

Cliff did receive a settlement, however it was less than he owed. Lawyers to fight it would have increased the loss. Red Cedar has benefited from the take over of Red’s roadhouse as well.

It must feel awful to see that photo on the front page of the TC, seeing the results of all his hard work, that was taken from him.

And it is shocking that he didn't get fully compensated for the money spent on the renos, never mind all the time and energy that goes into planning a reno that.
