Perhaps your dad was looking for experience, interest in world events, and news ability. All old fashioned concepts these days, eh?

Indeed he was an anachronism back then, albeit an honorable one, and immune to a pretty face, heh.

Remember too this was nearly 35 years ago, back in the days when the Old Boys' network reigned supreme, and particularly in fields like advertising, television and radio. He would have been one of the few not to be swayed. Good on you, pops.....

Nevertheless you would be hard pressed to argue that she wasn't ultimately very successful in her profession once she landed in Vancouver.

You are right, eye. I know Pamela and watched her for many years. She definitely put in her time doing the weekend news. Over the years, she improved, and clearly showed her dedication to sticking it out. I have no issue with her eventual success.

On top of which Pamela is/was also very heavily involved in community events, as many media-types often are. Another that comes to mind, despite his public image of being Oscar the Grouch, is Neil Macrae, latterly of CKNW. As was McKeachie, Norm Grohmann to name but a few.....

I cannot begin to count the number of community events and charitable causes dad was involved in, but over his career from the mid-50's to late
70's, suffice to say they were many...

And now Pamela will be working on Christy Clark's leadership campaign.

Global BC anchor Steve Darling was let go this morning:

I'm sad to say this is my last breaking news story for Global BC- after 18 years my anchor position has been eliminated and I will no longer be an employee of Global BC. I will deeply miss anchoring the morning news. Truly has been an honour to be in your living room every morning. I am very proud of the work we have done over the last 18 years. I will forever cherish the friends I have made, people I have worked with and the loyal viewers who have supported me. I am not sure what the future holds but I am confident it will be great.

'Wow'....but not really. He had lots of detractors in the broadcast community and I'm sure many posters on the Forum section on the Puget Sound Radio site will be ecstatic. Purely as a sidebar the guy was an obnoxious *****.

I see Randene Neill is the latest on air personality to say au revoir at Global TV; assuming program director Jill Krop hasn't completely lost her mind my guess is that her Shaw corporate masters are kicking her butt behind the scenes in an effort to reduce salaries and overhead, and maximize profits in the very best Shaw tradition.....

Now if only they would make a good decision and get rid of that new one Sonia who sounds like she has a mouth full of marbles every time she speaks

Always a possibility but supposedly whatever the opportunity its a "non-media" role at least according to the Global PR. Often these folks do take 'talking head' roles though in the private sector i.e. Simi Heer for BC Hydro, who also used to be a reporter for Global....

There don't seem to be many members of the BC media that don't make the jump to politics do there?

I think far more of them move into corporate or government communications.

Yup, Pam Martin for the BCG, Simi Heer (ex-Global TV) for BCHydro among others. Real estate was/is another big draw as Douglas Miller ex-CKVU weatherman was selling real estate in Lions Bay last time I saw him, ditto for Barry Houlihan ex-Global sportscaster in Maple Ridge, also Sarah Daniels ex-Global TV weatherperson, initially in White Rock and now doing the real estate schtick in Toronto

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Patti Pitts (CHEK) went to UVic communications, Drew Snider (C-FAX) went to BC Transit communications.
