The District of North Saanich is looking for a long-term operator to turn its former Sandown racetrack property into food-producing farmland.

 

How that will unfold and how quickly is not yet known, although there are plenty of ideas for the 83-acre site on Glamorgan Road, which is in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

 

A request for expressions of interest closes May 3, and the district is hoping to hear from applicants with experience in agriculture and community activities.

 

“We are looking to gauge the interest in the broader community,” said North Saanich Mayor Geoff Orr. “There’s a huge amount of positive potential there. We just have to manage it in the best way going forward.”

 

North Saanich wants to see detailed plans for financing, designing, developing and operating a variety of agricultural uses in an economically viable way. The operator would be responsible for managing leases to farmers working on the land and for partnerships with local organizations.

Apparently people keep getting stuck on the curbs in the parking lot...

 

 

 

Ryan Lesyshen, a mechanical engineer of Kerr Wood Leidal said he was not aware of the exact number of cars damaged but admitted, “My client has received complaints regarding cars driven over curbs and into the raingardens [flower beds].”

He said the owner of the building and parking lot is “hopeful that the addition of some taller plantings in the gardens [flower beds] will assist drivers with spatial awareness,” adding, “Spatial awareness is a driver’s responsibility.”

I always check in front of the car to see if there is a curb or other obstruction there before I drive away. If the spot in front of his car empty when he pulled in, why didn't he drive through so he wouldn't have to back out? Because he saw the curb when he drove in.

Young Driver's teaches that you should always prefer to pull-through when parking or if not then back in, such that when you depart you are always moving forward unobstructed.  Following this advice would prevent this type of accident.

 

A few plastic bollards bolted to that funky curb would probably do it too.

As per YD that is currently best practices.  You want to avoid backing out of a parking spot when possible and pulling through into the opposite stall is the simplest option.

When I was being taught how to drive you'd have zonked your exam by pulling through.

Practices change. The old rule about hands on the steering wheel at 10 and 2 changed with the advent of airbags

It was a no-no due to drivers pulling into an empty space not seeing Junior ramming through from the opposite side of the parking lot across two face-to-face stalls.

I’m going to have to question the veracity of this being a best practice in all scenarios. When there is even one vehicle blocking your view of potential vehicles zeroing in on the opposite spot it’s a dangerous manoeuvre.

The driving schools seem to avoid reversing as much as possible, ICBC is mostly concerned with a collision.  Maybe split the difference and pull through when you can clearly see, e.g. not when boxed in.

 

Parking lot manoeuvres should be at a low enough speed to avoid frontal collisions like that.  The bigger concern is the reaction of the one driver being blocked by the pulling through driver.  ;)

there is / was a uvic parking lot right by the bookstore that was a real killer for that. as it only has one row of concrete curbs / barriers. people would park into one. then forget because as they looked over the rest of the lot there were none. then they’d promptly hang up their car on it.
