Thetis Lake to offer pizza, noodles and hot dogs for park lovers

Times Colonist June 2, 2010 6:05 AM Be the first to post a comment

No more simple hotdogs and burgers for Thetis Lake fans -- now they'll have a choice of three local food vendors at the popular swimming spot.

The vendors -- Villages Pizza, Noodle Box and Mr. Tube Steak -- set up yesterday.

Yes, I should re-headline the article:

I may be mistaken but I thought I saw Mr. Tube Steak at Prior Lake.

How about the top of Mt. Doug and Mt. Tolmie? Make them responsible for a good thorough ground cleanup of any wrappings etc. before they ship off. I think it'd be great to have hot dogs and ice cream at the peak. I have seen an ice cream truck up on Mt. Tolmie years ago.

You're in for a world of hurt from the Friends of Beacon Hill Park Thought Police for even deigning to think that!!! They don't take too kindly to usurping natural parkland for unnantural purposes like food vending and congregating.

Given the topic, I was interested in FoBHP's mandate. Here's what I found on their website as some reasons as to why BHP needs defending:

Five City streets are built on Beacon Hill Park land. Covering 30 acres of Park land are Dallas Road, Douglas Street, Heywood Avenue, Park Boulevard and Southgate Street. The Park acreage remaining is only 154.47 acres. Internal Park roads, parking lots and hard surfaces cover another 16 acres.

Shiva H Vishnu!!! 20% has been eliminated since 1843, just so people can access it?!? That's like 1/4 acre per year over 167 years! Madness!! My God, what were we thinking! That kind of wanton destruction makes me feel like this:

We were at Mt. Tolmie a couple of weeks ago and the summit was littered with bags of liquor empties, much of it from drunk kids spilling out of hired limousines. Mt. Tolmie could actually be cleaner if vendors were allowed and told to keep the area tidy at all times.

A young international student drowned at Thetis lake this afternoon. This seems to happen at least once a year. I was there and I did what I could, but I can safely say that a lifeguard at this popular swimming destination would have likely saved this young mans life. I hope the CRD decides to make this happen. The main beach is small enough that one life guard could cover it well.

Are the drowning stats actually available somewhere? Usually it's related to illegal cliff diving combined with drinking, but not always.

This guy was in a group of 8-10 international students. None were drinking as far as I could tell. Main beach area at Thetis. I think he just wasn't a strong swimmer. Very sad

Last summer a friend of mine saved a young man's life at Thetis. A the fellow swam out too far and nobody (not even his parents!) noticed he was struggling to swim back. Luckily my friend who is a very strong swimmer noticed that something about the kid's behaviour was off and he jumped in and got to him just in time. Scary stuff.

I don't understand how such a popular beach has been operating without a lifeguard for so many years.

...and as I wrote in this thread, a group of 17 year olds driving too fast for the road crashed one of their vehicles into a tree along Thetis Lake Park's Highland Road on Monday. Lots of young people manage to find trouble here, it seems.

Did you do CPR or other first aid? It was an unusually altruistic gesture if you did. Typically, people are very rarely willing to help out strangers in such cases. I'm sure it was sad to witness or be part of something like this.

I was on my way to Prior Lake when I heard the fire trucks heading there.
I turned on the scanner and the BC Ambulance paged their people out to what they called it a Cardiac Arrest after a drowning.
They said that the CRD parks people had the gates open and were ready for the crews to drive right onto the beach area on the pathway that is normally used for foot traffic.

I called 911 when one of the soft spoken Asian girls told me she couldn't find her friend. At that point we didn't know how alarmed to be (language barrier and very "polite" young Exchange students). I was diving with several others looking for him. When someone surfaced with him next to me, I helped swim him to shore. Other people identified themselves as competent and did CPR until first responders arrived.

I've signed up for a CPR course since coming home from the lake. Next time I hope I can do more.

You did what you could MarkCB. This is a sad and tragic event. It will take some time to digest what you have just experienced.

I remember when they did have lifeguards there. But they decided they "couldn't afford" them sometime back in the dim mists of my memory.

Yes, I've heard several people speak about lifeguards being stationed at the lake in the past.

Lifeguarding there is a bit hazardous, because of the Gill-Man.

Just a reminder that idiots roam amongst us.  And to not light a campfire in the middle of one of the driest summers on record.

Please folks, stop burning our parks down.

Campfire blamed for blaze that partly closed Thetis Lake park

An abandoned campfire is to blame for a fire that destroyed more than three acres of remote forest atop Thetis Lake Regional Park, View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst said Tuesday night.

“Someone last night was camping here and had a campfire and left it, and we had a little bit of wind in the afternoon and we end up with a forest fire,” Hurst said. “This is exactly why we’re asking people not to have campfires this time of year.”
