Thanks! I can't wait to be back for good! I'm actually having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that I will soon be calling this place home. Not in a negative way. New adventure I guess.

Any of you folk climbers or mountain bikers? Or kayakers or skiers? haha.

Nobody here does that stuff. Victorians sit around eating scones and drinking tea.:D

Your optimism is both refreshing and very welcomed! What a great contrast to the doom and gloom "tech workers are fat and like golfing" thread at the bottom of the page. Way to go LM!

Haha thanks. Coming from Oromocto, NB helps. Going from one extreme to the other.

You all have been more than helpful, I really appreciate it. I will definitely keep you updated!

On another note, I just walked to and had breakfast at Lady Marmalade(as per another thread's discussion of breaky places) and walked by the old building that says 'new england' and 'established 1858.' I took a pick w iPhone but can't figure out how to upload it into msg. Was thinking can't wait for the day someone restores this building. I'd buy I condo in there! Haha.

Unfortunately that building will not be restored any time soon. The owners are family friends and they've made it clear that they ran through the gamut of options but the cost to restore and seismically upgrade (don't forget, we're in a very active earthquake zone) versus the volume of units would make this project uneconomical.

^ That's too bad. This is where a bigger tax base would really help - the surrounding regions should help pay for keeping regional treasures like this alive.

Or relax the code, taxes, and red-tape enough that something could happen. Don't worry about stuff like "hmm your hallways are only 1000mm not 1100mm" or "only one stairwell and no room for another? You can go for a historical exterior escape!"

That is quite unfortunate... tis quite a wonderful building. Love the big windows. And it sucks for the family who owns it that they can't do anything with it.

P.S. Update: went and did a whirlwind tour of 15 places today, and 8 made the short list. There are quite a few nice little places around here in my price range, reassuringly. Didn't really have any idea what they would be like from the pictures on MLS. You can never tell from pictures. Also, the city is definitely way smaller than the impression I got from the map... which is awesome.

In what areas were these places that made your short-list?

Downtown. none farther east than Quadra. I don't think any of the ones I looked at today were farther east than Quadra. And I don't think any of them were farther north than Pandora. Except for one on Swift.

There were only 2 (unfortunately) in Cook Street Village that were in my price range (and within my age restrictions haha, that ruled a lot out), and they couldn't really compare to some of the newer units downtown.

So, how many of the homes you shortlisted were new and how many pre-owned?

All of them have people living in them. Buildings were built (or renovated) in 2004 or more recently, except for the Mermaid Wharf which was 2000.

Well, the search continues. Went back to the shortlist today, and eliminated some more. Although I added a few more (one to look at tomorrow in the cormorant building by the needle exchange place... which has moved, or is moving??), and the Oriental. I had talked myself out of getting one of the units there, but then I got shown around the inside of the building today... and boy, what a cool old building. I'm so very tempted again. We shall see.

Needle exchange has long since left Cormorant. If you mean in the 700blk, I think that's a good location and buildings.

Yeah, I was referring to a listing in the Corazon. Haven't seen it yet, will tomorrow probably.
