A year ago I was griping about Port Renfrew wilderness making the cover of Victoria's main tourism publication. This year they're getting warmer: Goldstream wilderness is on the cover. Can evasiveness really be an effective marketing strategy? Can you really promote something by never showing it off?

(For those who don't know what I'm talking about, you can review some of my past gripes on this topic here and here and here.)

A new company is advertising floating hot tub rides around Victoria's Gorge Waterway and Upper Harbour this summer.

Billing itself as "Canada's first hot tub on water," Hot Tub Boat Canada says it will start renting the floating hot tubs in the city on July 6.

The hot tubs are built in the Netherlands and can hold up to six people. They will be available for 1.5-hour self-guided tours around the city's downtown.

Owner Tanner McLeod tells CTV News the charge for rentals will be approximately $65 per person plus a $35 boat fee to cover environmental costs.

The company says the hot tubs are heated with an onboard stove that burns briquettes.

What next? A new Star Wars theme park that doesn't contain any Star Wars?

The Point Ellice House Museum and Gardens at 2616 Pleasant St. will make its grand re-opening on July 20 for the first time under new management.

The three-month renovation saw updates and repairs to floors and windows, as well as the installation of a new exhibit.

The “Points of Luxury” exhibit will examine the glamorous life of the O’Reilly family, who lived at Point Ellice House for 108 years.

“The Politics of Luxury isn’t your grandmother’s historic house experience,” said Kelly Black, executive director of Point Ellice House in an emailed statement. “The exhibit takes on the colonial past and examines how decisions made within these historic homes had important and sometimes devastating effects on the people of British Columbia, particularly First Nations—decisions that continue to shape the province today.”

Over 6,000 artifacts will be on display to help illustrate the story.

this article is missing a comment from harbour ferries

Victoria will have a quiet and environmentally friendly new tourist attraction buzzing around its harbour next year when the Victoria Electric Boat Co. takes to the waves.

The Gray Line Hop-On-Hop-Off division of Wilson’s Group will add a nautical component to its tours with six fully-electric boats offering a hop-on-hop-off service around the Inner Harbour and Gorge Waterway.

Also missing in the official Victoria vacation guide - the fact that there one can take a direct ferry to Salt Spring (it’s not indicated, apart from going with one of two tour companies), nor is it indicated on the Greater Victoria & Region map. Maybe the ferry stops on the Gulf Islands on the way to Tsawwassen.

The guide counts the Gulf Islands as one of Victoria’s regions (there are six, apparently)...

Interesting as BC Ferries offers its own Salt Spring vacation packages. They certainly seem to downplay BC Ferries' offerings. I don't think people realize there's a lot of "pay for play" going on in this guide and that it's not as objective as you'd hope an "official" guide should be.

Is there anything but "pay to play"? In general these types of guides are entirely funded by advertisers and those advertisers are the ones that get the top ratings.

is there any small powerboat rental at the harbour? I’d think that would be a big hit. not everyone has the skills and ability for kayaking. but any idiot can run a powerboat. the only hard part is steering and stopping. and understanding the harbour map.

they used to have them at oak bay marina.

ob marine group still has them out at pedder bay. https://obmg.com/rental-boats/

I think that you can by Canoe but you would need to have your boat license.

The inner harbour between the bridge and the coast guard station is a very busy place with many special rules. For instance, the harbour master boats are continually shooing boaters and kayakers out of the runway or away from the impending Coho.

There are a lot of places that would be better for power boat rentals.

i don't think you do for rentals.

https://aceboater.co...afety-checklist

Those without previous proof of competency that rent a pleasure craft fitted with a motor will be required to complete a rental boat safety check list, and carry on board the co-signed section of the Check List as proof of competency for the duration of the rental.

Provided the motor is below 10 horsepower you don’t need a license to operate it.

or if it's a rental.  they made an exception so they did not put those type of businesses out of business when the operating licensing came in.

the last item on this list:

so it's kind of a crash course by the rental agency before you head out.

Rental Boat Safety Checklists

Canadian law requires anyone operating a power-driven boat to carry proof of competency onboard. Enforcement agents accept a completed Rental Boat Safety Checklist as proof of competency in a boat rental situation. These checklists, developed in 2014, feature visual icons and plainly written statements in a ready-to-use format. They are designed to help rental agency staff easily review important safety information like boat operation, boating safety rules and local hazards with their clients.

I would hope that they are being treated exactly the same as private sector employees in the same field. No point spending time and money on advertising now as nobody is paying attention.

Laid off? I doubt it. But I suppose the board could convene and recommend that. they aren’t getting much hotel room tax now.

Laid off, except for a "core team." Don't know the numbers, though. via https://www.tourismv...PCf_HiYyj7_Qzhw
