I agree, let's just stick to the topic and not turn this into another debate about social issues.

The region is growing. It needs amenities throughout to support that growth, and inevitably duplication of services/entertainment venues will occur to meet demand.

Now back to the topic at hand, I am surprised that Cineplex chose not to build a Colossus theatre in Langford. Such theatres are the latest suburban craze in Canada.

Weren't movie theatres supposed to die 20 or more years ago, when VHS tapes came out?

Then again when surround-sound and DVDs came out?

Then again when HDTV and cheap big-screens came out?

Next thing you know am/fm radio will be sticking around after TVs, CDs, digital file-sharing and satellite radio and iPods come out. ;)

What's next, print newspapers surviving? :)

I went to SilverCity last week and was surprised that they're having 2 golden-oldies nights per month starting in the new year. Sucks for that SilverCity is doing it but maybe it would still be worth the trouble to get over there to see Dr Zhivago on a big screen... Except for Psycho I forget what other movies they had planned

couldn't Capitol 6 borg the parking lot next door? then it could be Capitol 12! maybe that would just create an oversupply in movie screens in the area

A couple of years ago I heard some talk that the Capitol 6/Empire could redevelop. The screens could go underground. I don't think the idea was seriously pursued.

The projectionists went on strike quite a few years ago, and I think that was almost the end of that trade. Quite highly paid if I remember correctly.

Someone in the business could help me out here.....I don't think they use film anymore do they? I think it is a digital feed.

I use to be a projectionist at silver city back in high school. At the time we used real film, and it will catch on fire. That being said the sound strip was located on one side of the film frame and unless you changed the xenon bulb and didn't adjust the dish properly while running a test strip loop chances of you burning a film was low. Many people believed the entire thing was digital as we used a digital projector to display the pre-show which was computer controlled as was the main projector. Occasionally one might have seen the lights not come on when the credits started to roll or the lights not turn off for the feature and that essentially was the foil reader missing the slight piece of tin foil we placed in the film while we were building it.

sorry for being off-topic :D

@Mike:

I am also surprised on the size of the theatre. In Ontario that is all they seem to build.

Do they have enough room?

Sections of prefabricated walls are being brought in by truck and placed by by the crane almost as fast as they are arriving. It wont be long before all the walls are up.

I keep forgetting to take my cam with me...but the walls are up on the new Cineplex 7 at Westshore Town Centre. I have real concerns about the traffic flow in an out of the mall parking lot once this project is completed.

I was just out there a few hours ago but forget to check. I'm sure substantial progress has been made since the January photos Ressen posted.

Walla are up, roof is on, interior steel work is in place. Metal framing in place to receive exterior glass around entrance.

Almost at lockup stage. There's only a few more windows to be installed and that's done. Didn't get a good look inside but it's safe to say I think this one is not going to be finished for another month at least.

They've got the cineplex sign up and some cross hatch trim stuff up on the side of the building. I know they had to go to langford council to rubber stamp a variance about some kind of sign on the roof as well. Anyway looks like they have dry walled inside. Hard to see much inside with the fencing.

The sign promised Spring of 2011. Now it's Summer. So tired of waiting. I want this thing done. I'm hoping ticket prices aren't going to be higher than normal as it's a special digital theatre. In other places where these types of cineplexes have been installed the prices have averaged around $2.50 higher than regular prices. I'm still psyched not to have to drive to Silver City anymore, though.:)

I understand that they are double shifting the project and working weekends. The goal is to open in mid July.

I can confirm what concorde said about the completion date. I was actually talking to the foreman (really nice guy, by the way) a few weeks ago and asked him what the schedule was like. He told me August 1st opening at the very latest. Just under six weeks to go, then; we'll see how it shapes up.

According to Times Colonist the opening is set for July 6th. After some digging, it appears the actual opening is July 15th according to Cineplex's Statement Releases
