According to Times Colonist the opening is set for July 6th. After some digging, it appears the actual opening is July 15th according to Cineplex's Statement Releases

Haha, anyone who drives by the construction site can tell you it's not happening by the 6th. I even think the 15th might be a bit of a stretch but we'll see. It's definitely quite close to being done... but you can still tell how much work needs to be done and where.

I know somebody working there and she said they are opening this weekend. Opening up for Harry Potter.

I'm excited for no more trips down to Silver City, can walk to the theatre from my place.

Really, this weekend? This theater will be very popular, I'm sure.

Ok, so I just checked the Cineplex website and sure enough, Harry Potter is scheduled for the 15th. http://www.cineplex....re-Cinemas.aspx

I happened to be in the "Western Communities" this weekend (waiting for my tee time at Bear Mtn - Mountain Course...man is that a great track) and happened by the new theatre. Looks pretty close to being done to my amateur eyes!

Confirmed today the opening day is this Friday (I work in the mall). I can definitely attest to the fact that a lot has changed in the last week. It looked far from done a week ago but now it looks basically ready to open except for maybe some landscaping details.

Heard something the other day on the radio about being able to get drinks in one of the theatres (and I am not talking soda pop).

Also, with the opening of this theatre, the Homesence in Victoria, and the eventual Superstore coming to to the old bowling alley behind Swiss Chalet on Douglas, the us vs. them divide at Admirals will be close to complete! ;)

Went there opening night and came away quite satisfied. Everything was just as advertised. No more soft picture with scratches and pops. Crystal clear Blu-Ray quality. Large, comfy seats you can rock back in and raise the armrest to in case you want to get cuddly. I will most definitely be back.

^Presumably the projection was bright, and not senselessly dimmed like Roger Ebert notes is happening everywhere?

http://blogs.suntime..._the_light.html

'Water for Elephants' and 'Madea's Big Happy Family' were playing in brightly lit 35mm prints and, across the hall, in drastically darker digital versions." His observations indicated the problems centered on Sony projectors: "Digital projection can look excellent when presented correctly. Go into Theater 14 at the Common, newly outfitted with a Christie 4K projector, and you'll see a picture that is bright and crisp, if somewhat colder than celluloid."

"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

I used to have my projector set to eco mode, but it does look better on "burn the bulb faster" mode.

But at $350 per bulb...

We were in one of the regular theatres not set up for 3D, so the picture was everything you could hope for. I can't wait for this 3D fad to die. As much as the studios want to push it on us and make us pay more, the people are pushing back, saying they don't want the gimmicks.

Saw Harry Potter in the UltraAVX theater. Definitely expensive, but it was nice to be able to book good seats instead of fighting to find some.

Picture was dark and dingy, but that is more probably an effect of the 3D and the filmwork, since the trailers were very bright and crisp. Was it worth the incredible premium price? Not really, but it was nicer than trying to watch a film in the downtown theaters.

Have you ever had to change a bulb? I had a projector TV that got used for hours a day for over 10 years and never had to replace a bulb.

Having said that, if I still had it, I would be hoping it would burn out so that I would have an excuse to replace it with a flat screen.;)

What sort of projection TV? CRT projection (the first kind) would go nearly forever because it used cathode ray tubes, not light bulbs like LCD/DLP projection TVs use.

My first projector blew the bulb at around 900 hrs, but because that was 5 years after I bought it I just replaced the projector. I only use it a few hours per week, plasma TV for watching the news or the Mating Channel.

A theatre owner responding to Ebert's critique said he spends a fortune on bulbs:

I am a stickler for presentation and want to make sure that every screening at the Alamo lives up to my high standards. Bulbs are expensive, and it is very tempting to run bulbs well past recommended bulb life or to not run them as hot as you can in order to extend their life. From January to April, we spent $23,000 on bulbs for Lamar alone. We will not skimp on bulb size or bulb life at the Alamo.

I am interested in how local theatres are handling this controversy.

With the prices theaters charge for serviettes you'd think they could stand to afford the technology used to display their movies.

Any complaints coming out of theaters about costs just seem ridiculous.
