^^Sorry, don't buy it. Most of the best, most livable cities in the world have a huge parking issue. It's just an unfortunate symptom.

Supply of parking in the centre of any urban area is restricted. It has to be for simple space and economic reasons. If supply outstrips demand, then restrictions and then pricing need to be used.

Wilson's Walk should not have a parking easement, but that being said residential parking restrictions should come into effect as commuters are locking in parking for the whole day and causing problems for residents who need the parking, whether for short term loading/unloading/whatever or long term.

Not too long as I walked across the Johnson Street Bridge I chatted with a fellow who lives in Sooke but leaves his car in Vic West all day. Perfect for him, he said.

Unfortunately that just pushes commuters further into Vic West. Songhees employs this tactic.

I think if available parking is too far into Vic West people wouldn't park there because it would take too long to walk into town

25 minutes is the longest walk. I'm sure some park and take the bus even.

^that's what some are doing on my street. They ditch their vehicle then go to the bus stop down the street.

Never underestimate someone who doesn't want to pay for parking!

Nothing, and that's becoming a problem for residents.

you should check with city hall, there are a lot of unposted bylaws.  For example I know a tourist bus can't park in a 2 hr zone in a residential neighborhood

another rule is apartment buildings can't rent out parking to non residents of the building.  I know its done a lot by buildings close to town, but it is in fact illegal.

That's funny you mention that, a tourist bus is now parking just down the street. It's bonkers what's happening in Vic West.

If I recall correctly, the Pacifica representative mentioned at the council meeting that they currently do this for the few temporarily vacated spots they have available in the existing building on the site.

make parking zones and require permits that people purchase. easy. don't force developers to provide parking. If there is not parking, then people can A) buy a permit from the city; B) spend 2 hours a day avoiding paying for parking; or C) get rid of their car and walk/bike/bus

Developers should be forced to provide parking.

Canadians purchased more vehicles in 2014 than any other year. We're not getting rid of vehicles, we're simply changing what we drive. And as for the walk/bike/bus thing, each one of those modes requires you to leave your car behind somewhere  :1954_dancing:

^ Maybe in a subsidized housing project. But in strata I see no point. People will buy in if they see value and the project flops if they don't.

It's looking like Wilson's Walk construction startup is imminent... Notices posted at The Wing regarding main entrance parking, and the bus stop on Wilson infront of the site has been temporarily moved down to Tyee.
