Why did the museum have to leave again?

Why did the museum have to leave again?

"The Museum’s Bastion Square venue closed in October 2014 because the provincially owned courthouse built in 1889 required seismic upgrading and other structural work."

i went to their new location a few months back, i was pretty shocked at what has come of it to be honest it used to be this wonderfully large museum with lots to check out, now it's just 1 somewhat large room with a few things set up, when i asked about the move they mentioned "the building was in bad shape"  now it would be nice to see it end up somewhere more substantial

The Maritime Museum should have gone into the old CP steamship building on Belleville street.

Putting the Robert Bateman gallery, essentially a private art gallery featuring works no local or tourist can afford in such a prime location is truly an example of poor planning.

The restaurant that shares the old terminal is unimpressive, with mediocre food, and an oddly cold atmosphere.

In other words, the use they put forward for the building is entirely unimpressive and misplaced in terms of the buildings history and location.

But if being brutally honest, the Maritime Museum (which I wholeheartedly support) also needs to seriously up its game if it wants to be taken seriously as a local museum attraction.

The displays in the old courthouse location were extremely long in the tooth, with little change over the years, with incredibly poor lighting for a museum, with somewhat uninspired displays to begin with.

The current museum location can't really be taken seriously, and I suspect is largely intended to just perpetuate the museum through what must be very hard times, and also house their library, which is THE marine library on the West Coast of Canada.

Still, it seems that the Maritime Museum remains a resource with an awful lot of potential as a local attraction, yet - as an organization they seem to continue to be ignored at every level of government when it comes to even rudimentary levels of serous support.

Work is underway to transform the former Maritime Museum in Bastion Square into a shared community arts space with areas for workshops, studios, exhibits and performances.

The project is in conceptual stages, but the hope is to convert the former Maritime Museum building into a multi-media arts hub perhaps with a café and pub, Victoria councillors were told Thursday.

“The whole point of this is to create affordable, shared art space for the community,” said Mayor Lisa Helps.

Helps said that she has met with representatives from the province and the federal government and they are both “very excited about this project” and the province has agreed to fund an estimate of what would be needed to rehab the building and outfit the space.

*snip*

“There’s an attempt to animate it with the market and that sort of thing, but it really needs more people coming and going on a regular basis and an arts hub is certainly seen as key to that,” she said.

The arts hub is not a city-led project. A small group with members from the Downtown Victoria Business Association, the Bastion Square Revitalization Association, the community and city hall are meeting “to see the project through the pre-project development phase,” says a city staff report.

Owned by the province, 28 Bastion Square opened as a courthouse in 1888 and most recently housed the Maritime Museum. The museum was forced to move out in 2014 after the province raised concerns about the condition of building. It has remained unoccupied since.

A design charette is scheduled late this month to help inform what work would have to be done by the province to bring the building up to usable standards.

Another pub? I'm hearing from publicans that the existing volume of drinking establishments is already making it hard for much of the week, particularly in the off season. Within 250 metres of the courthouse is the largest concentration of liquor primary establishments on the Island.

Depends on the target market, design, and focus of whatever potential "pub" space goes in. Yes, there's a lot in the area, but the differences among what's already there are fairly slim. The Local, Darcy's and Garrick's Head are fairly similar, Irish Times and Bard & Banker are basically the same thing, and the Churchill is Garrick's with lower lighting, less noise, and no dedicated kitchen. I imagine that whatever goes in to a proposed art hub will be less of a watering hole and more of a cafe or lounge that happens to serve liquor,

Sure, that could be the direction they go. That concept would, though, compete with Tapa Bar and Bodega, perhaps?

But it does sound to me that they're hoping for more than merely a licensed cafe. It's the liquor that they no doubt expect to help pay for a large portion of the operating costs.

The Bastion Square Assiciation is largely lead by the Irish Times folks.

Has anyone been to the Maritime Museum in Halifax?  Would run head to head with the our Royal BC Museum.

I doubt Helps wants anything to do with white settlers, which tends to be a lot of the artifacts identified in the maritime museum.  If anything is going to be done, it has to be by the Province.  Why not expand the Royal BC Museum to also have a new Maritime wing?

^ that makes more sense, Royal BC Museum wing.

Worse case scenario you *wing the wong number to inquire on hours and admission prices.

* one entire wing could be about teaching today’s youth about respect for Asian cultures.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are trying to communicate above, but I did not see much Asian artifacts when I was there.  I was not saying that there was not Asian immigration.

i was thinking about the maritime museum the other day.. and of course i was sad to see what it has turned into.. and it got me wondering.. why there isn't a museum about the history of Victoria, covering from the beginning of fort Victoria, all the way to current times, i'm sure there's an amazing amount of very interesting history this city has which can also include it's long maritime history something more focused then what royal BC museum offers

I have a feeling that in the current political climate there is little appetite to document, let alone celebrate the City of Victoria's colonial past.

I just had a sudden flashback to that HBC museum/gallery/whatever that used to be up at the top floor of the Bay
