"Sport Bar" is not the official account of the Tally Ho Sports bar, but we presume it talks for management.  The "hopefully" for renovation probably suggests this was not a planned or orderly shut-down, at least in the eyes of some.

Some time after 8:17pm last night they pulled their Realtor.ca listing, which was here:    https://www.realtor....Columbia-V8T4N4

I'm hearing at least one door was chained shut from the inside.

Travelocity says it's sold out. Makes sense if it's closed for renovations.

CTV regularly runs ads on CFAX saying (and I loosely quote):

"You're presented with information from all over the place, but can you trust it? CTV digs deep to uncover the real facts behind the stories to bring you reliable news and information."

In this case no questions were asked about the situation with unionized staff at the hotel, no questions were asked about the sudden removal of the hotel's listing from Realtor.ca, and no questions were asked about the posts from hotel management on social media referring to renovations, but which appear refuted in the CTV piece.

So what we have here is a dig against other media by CTV while the CTV piece itself is completely void of any real information.

Here's the piece:

Tally-Ho Hotel closure planned months ago, future of property uncertain

The owner of the Tally-Ho Hotel in Victoria is refuting rumours that the business closed abruptly.

Online reports surfaced over the weekend stating the hotel closed its doors without warning and that staff were locked out.

The owner said the speculation was “completely false” and the closure had been planned.

“We need to take some time and figure out the best long-term for the property,” Wayne Hopkins told CTV News. [So you do it by closing down your business?]

According to Hopkins, staff at the hotel were notified about the closure two months ago.

Employees were either helped with finding new employment or took a job at the Tally-Ho Sports Bar and Grill and The Hideaway Café.

Hopkins added the hotel stopped taking reservations a while ago.

The building is old and doesn’t make money in the winter, Hopkins says.

He adds that there is no timeline and he's unsure when and if the hotel will re-open.

Management will now work on figuring out whether the property will undergo renovations or take on a “whole new concept.”

Both the Tally-Ho Sports Bar and Grill and The Hideaway Café will remain open.

It would have been prudent to have had a press release ready to go the moment the doors closed.

The owner of the Tally-Ho Hotel says online reports that the hotel closed abruptly without notifying employees are false.

Wayne Hopkins said he gave 60 days notice and severance pay to the employees before officially closing the hotel on Saturday.

The Tally-Ho Sports Bar & Grill and Hideaway Café remain open.

“This wasn’t a quick decision,” Hopkins said.

“It’s old, it doesn’t meet the expectations of today’s travellers, so we need to figure out what the next best use is.”

The hotel employed 10 to 14 people in the low season and up to 20 in the high season, he said.

I note that the only comment in reply to the Citified article says, "We were aware of the rooms closing 2-3 weeks ago."

Businesses open doors, close doors, renovate, sell, burn down, or get bought out every single day. A dozen or so unionized staff aren't going to make or break your business, and any attempt to paint that picture is farcical.

Speculative bits? The only statement edited was the possibility that the hotel may have sold, considering the listing had been removed. We've confirmed that the listing had expired and updated the story accordingly. If you'd like to make a mountain out of a molehill, go right ahead.

What's interesting, of course, is that someone has stated that they knew about the closure 2-3 weeks ago. We don't know what their connection is to the hotel, but the TC and CTV have stated employees knew of the closure two months ago. So which is it? Weeks or months?

To be fair, that person that said they knew about it 2-3 weeks ago, so might have just heard then, even though the info might have been out there for 60 days.

I'm not even sure why it all matters that much.  The hotel has closed, it's not likely to re-open, and the sports pub and lounge carry on.  That's what has been reported all along.

It's fact that there has been a long history of attempts to oust the union.

Sure. What I'm saying is, if Benezet is trying to use that comment to bolster a "see, it wasn't abrupt" argument, it's weak.

I'm sure a whole bunch of people knew that the place was closing, but the public did not. And that's the angle Citified took, that as far as the public was concerned, a mainstay of that neighbourhood suddenly closed without notice and management had no clear answer when news broke.

The way management went about this whole thing was just bizarre. At the very least have a sign on your door, or post something to your social media. Instead there was silence, and coupled with the expiration of the for-sale listing the optics weren't good.

I'm not sure that the closing of a motel in low season to renovate is worthy of a press release and news story. The food services may be a mainstay of the neighbourhood, but I very much doubt that any area residents are going to be impacted by not having a cheap motel to stay at in their own community.

Well, we don't know that. Lots of similar hotel properties act as medium term rentals for people who can't otherwise find apartments or can't afford them. Was anyone in this hotel displaced? Were some people counting on that lodging space? What happened to the employees? We don't know. But I do know one individual that was offered a job that they could not take due to the scheduling requirements in the restaurant, and they are out of a job.

We also don't know whether there will be a renovation. Management has been very vague in that regard. They've since said the hotel might just sit there shuttered, or it might be renovated, or it might be repurposed.
