Just picked up a Groupon for this place. Looking forward to a poutine and a pint.

Fernwood Inn becomes Edinburgh for a day... For the movie that they are filming about JK Rowling (?).

Complete with the customary phone booth. Can we not film a single movie without oddly placed phone booths?

(I particularly love the booth ridiculously positioned next to the parking lot in Goodfellows when the narrator hears of the death of the character played by Joe Pesci (sp?)).

No, phone booths and double-decker buses required for UK movie shoots. (See the original Mini in the window reflection?)

USA Today newspaper honour-boxes required for USA shoots.

Or the generic equivalent:

Cast and crew were stationed in all their luxury trailers etc at the Marina all last week and weekend - seems like a lot of movies set up camp near the end of the walkways. Private, quiet, oceanfront - why not?

The Fernwood Inn is hosting it's annual community event, the Annual Neighbours for Change Block Party today on Gladstone Avenue in front of The Fernwood Inn. The event is a fundraiser to raise money for local community projects. This year, we're teaming up with Landeca to update the decrepit little gazeebo in Fernwood Square with something much nicer.

It's from 2-5 today, rain (boo!) or shine (hooray!). Here's some of what'll be on tap for the day:

  • GREAT MUSIC with Ty Harvey and Tres Grandes
  • BBQ with Fernwood Inn-made burgers and veggie burgers
  • Delightful cool beverages to enjoy on the patio
  • A dunk tank for your amusement (and refreshment if you care to get in there)
  • An obstacle course for kids big and small
  • Face painting and children’s activities
  • A photo booth
  • A special appearance by Fernwood’s own Terry “The Bubble Man” (of recent NY Times fame)
  • Familiar faces and lots of smiles
  • A pretty sweet silent auction with items like a Foosball table, kite surfing lessons, massages, restaurants, cruiser bike and more.

If you're wondering whether or not you'll have fun, check out some highlights of the 2010 block party, complete with classic southern folk rock accompaniment.

The most recent issue of Eat Magazine lists the winners of their annual "Exceptional Eats Awards," as voted on by readers. For 2013, under the category of "Neighbourhood Gems", in response to the following question:

"Everyone’s neighborhood should have one: warm and friendly atmosphere, decent food and drinks, and wallet-friendly prices. Which neighbourhood restaurant, bistro, pub, or café is your 'go-to' for a 'walking-to' date night? Name the place and the neighbourhood."

Readers of Victoria vote to award the following:

Gold: Stage Wine Bar – Fernwood
Silver: Fernwood Inn – Fernwood
Bronze: Bubby’s Kitchen – Fairfield

We had no idea that we were in the running and there was no concerted campaign to encourage our patrons to vote for us. Indeed, we are honoured to have been considered. Along with the Gold winner, Stage Wine Bar, we are proud to say that now, more than ever, Fernwood is for Foodies!

Good work, Fugger. That's quite amazing that two businesses right across the street from each other took home gold and silver.

For half a decade The Fernwood Inn has been pleased to be a part of the vibrant Fernwood community. This old-school block party is fun for all ages, with burgers, drinks and sunshine for all. Live music by Ange Hehr will keep the mood up and set the stage for a lot of laughs and friendly faces. This event raises funds for the Roger Colwill Fund for The Environment, where money goes to local green initiatives.

Highlights include face-painting, BBQ, ice cream, a killer silent auction, local marketplace, live music and the PREMIER of the gladiator game!

Going on Sunday from 2-5PM (i.e., right now!). C'mon down!
