For several years we've heard rumours of the famed H&M clothing store expanding into the Victoria market. The most credible info I've personally come across came from an H&M employee from another city who has been waiting for an opportunity to transfer here after management in her store brought up the possibility of a Victoria store.

Anyhow, the most recent rumblings point to the store opening at Hillside Mall once the shopping centre completes its facelift.

I know we've heard that Uptown might be the location of choice but more often than not any information that makes it way down the grapevine pairs H&M with Hillside Mall.

They've been looking at a high profile downtown location too, but I'm not sure if they've given up on that now.

Either way, it will be welcomed by most in town, atleast those of us with kids since their kids clothes are pretty darn cute and inexpensive.

Slight hijack here, why oh why is the facelift/reno of Hillside taking so long? It seems ridiculously long, and I'd be curious to know the numbers as to how many tenants have left during the construction (can think of atleast three off-hand).

Renovations have a nasty habit of dragging out for extended periods of time. It's much easier to build a new structure than it is to work within the confines of an existing one.

I wonder if I am a 'one-off' in that it has completely turned me off shopping there, except for Bolens Books (they are great, and not in the mess). There is nothing there that I cannot find elsewhere other than Sears... that I can think of, anyways. And Hillside is my 'local' mall, but I find myself frequenting Uptown and Mayfair now. So for *me* Hillside will NEED some unique stores to bring me back.

I don't think you are alone. I have been pretty much just hitting the food court, Bolens and Thrifty's as of late.

It does seem like the slowest project ever. I mean isn't the plan to build an addition as well?

It has a whole new look!

Not going to be H&M.... Marshall's is coming soon! Second floor of the new addition, above the new shoppers.

why don't we have an H&M? Every 100k+ town in europe seems to have one (plus trams and a way denser city centre but lets not go there) why is victoria so podunk?

Here is the reason we don't have an H&M. We won't give up our socks and sandals.

That doesn't mean they're not going into Hillside. I don't think anyone really expected a "flagship" style H&M in Victoria, like what is at Pacific Centre or Coquitlam Centre over here. There are plenty of one-floor, ~15,000-sq-ft H&M locations in Canada. Still plenty of room for this.

Major brands do not care to be announced in lumps with other retailers. They have their own very strict and brand-conscious announcement platforms which mall operators strictly adhere to.

What I'm hearing is direct from people who work at the mall who have sniffed out H&M's intentions. They could be wrong, but I'd be more inclined to believe them than a rumour off the street.
