This morning the Shop Local Twitter feed asked Victorians to "get shifty" and switch to local coffee shops when "grabbin' your before work cuppa joe."

The entire Twitter post is like this Grabbin' your "before work" cuppa joe ... think #local #yyj owned first ... Do the shift! @TenPercentShift ... Come on #yyj ... get shifty!

Please, please, please do us a favour and stop with the gimmicky tactics. Consumers are well aware of what they like and a slapped together Twitter post just trivializes the concerns of local businesses. We do not need to be told to "get shifty" and switch to local coffee shops that other than being locally owned typically serve brand name coffees that are anything but local, but if the shop local organizers insist on this form of marketing at the very least compile a list of participating local coffee shops and identify how each one differs from the pack. Make us curious, do not rely on guilt tripping us into shopping at local businesses.

Whoever the creative team is behind this campaign needs to regroup, grow up and not degrade local businesses to the level of pleading second rate alternatives desperate for consumers to "get shifty."

While I think that it is always good to support well-deserving local shops, this seems to be missing the key piece that unless you buy your coffee from Amazon, every shop is employing locals. In fact a place like starbucks likely employs more locals than a similar sized locally owned shop because they are not going to have the owner pouring coffee and working the schedule to the bare minimums to make payroll every two weeks.

It has a whole new look!

That and the fact many of these chains buy a considerable volume of advertising across a variety of advertising platforms.

I support local businesses whenever I can and I know the majority of Victorians do as well. People go where they know they'll find what they're looking for, it's just that simple. If a local business is struggling and if their product offering and service are exemplary other factors are at play like the high cost of doing business in such a small city.

Know it all.

I had the exact same thought. At the same time, a few places in town (like Discovery) employ people to roast their coffee, although knowing what I know of roasting this is probably negligible compared to the sheer number of people employed at Tim's and Starbucks.

Why not push local beers? I see tons of people leaving liquor stores with crappy domestic or imported macrobrews!

With what appears to be some successful and fast growing local breweries, I don't think local beers need any additional pushing.

With the number of local coffee shops that are around, I'd be surprised to find out that many are struggling. Most seem to be growing and expanding.
