And...

Quite frankly if they had called the border last year, or any year of the last 17 they would have got the same answer. For 17 years the exact same "school offcials" have been dealing with it, nothing has changed this year. Quite frankly if you send your Honduran kid to Canada, you as a parent are stupid.

Actually, something did change in the USA since this time last year, and border crossings are being affected. I will leave it at that.

40 schools see no problem but one does, therefore "something did change?" That's nonsense.

Feel free to link the multitudes of stories of illegal alien minors being detained at the border, and shipped back to their country of origin since January.  There are none.  But as I said, the rule has always been "bring your ID" and that has not changed this year.

Not sure how you can say things haven't changed, when there have been two executive orders issued. They're held up in the courts right now, but that could change with no notice at any time. It is fine to say "bring your ID", but if that ID identifies you as a national of certain countries, then things have definitely changed.

I'm going out in a limb to say people that are not legally in the US probably rarely went on these trips before. What responsible parent would put their child at risk like that?

Nothing has changed except officials now have stronger backing to actually enforce the law. Most of them are thankful of that.

It's funny too because Canada has and does enforce our immigration law. If you are here illegally you WILL be deported. Seems like a reasonable approach. Not sure why this is such a controversial idea in the US.

Keep this in context because the Greater Victoria School District is changing it's policy on travel to USA as well.  Trips to the USA already planned and paid for are going ahead but no new trips are allowed to happen for the forseeable future.

More liberal administrators.  If there is a risk, there is a risk.  Why does money have anything to do with it?  Oh ya, because parents will give them hell if money has been raised.

The band has a reputation for fun performances with unique themes, and it’s reason they are always a favorite when they walk the parade route in Victoria, BC.  After participating for the last 18 years, the district says the trip is off.

“I feel like our district overreacted quite a bit," student Solomon Delves explained.

School leaders say they're concerned undocumented students might have a hard time getting back into the country because of tightened border security.  It's an argument that some say doesn't make sense because the school has never allowed anyone to go if they didn't have appropriate paperwork

“Nothing has changed at the border,” school volunteer Phil Schile said. Schile said they check every student’s paperwork before they leave and make sure those students will be able to return.

Whether you like this administration or not, the same rules have applied forever at the border and there's no undocumented students going through on the bus and there never had been and there never will be.”

Many students and parents say they wish the district announced their decision sooner.  Now, they're scrambling to get refunds on hotel rooms and other travel arrangements.

Parade organizers say other local bands like Kingston Middle School, Mercer Island High School, and UW are still performing, but there's no doubt it will not be the same without that something special only the Kentlake Band can bring.

Boooooring.

This whole border tightening stuff is getting lame. I guess it's time to come up with something else to distract from the fact that you're upset with the results of a democratic election, hey guys?

I bet this is how the conversation went down in the board room:

"Gawd, I so hate Trump."

"Yeah. I so hate Trump, too. But what can we do to make sure every one of our students also hates Trump?"

"Let's make the kids give up something they've been looking forward to, and blame it on Trump!"

"Oh my gosh, Apple, that's so progressively passive aggressive and diabolical! So you really think if we cancel this trip and blame it on Trump, the kids will remember this for the rest of their lives and hate the Republican Party forever?"

"Well, yeah! Kids trust their teachers. They don't expect us to pull the wool over their eyes and treat them as political pawns."

"Ah, great. We're so smart."

Is that more or less than come out for the Pride Parade?  ;)

Or they were legitimately concerned....

Boarders are different and it's not only Trumpf. I recently got kicked out of the EU and slammed with a 2 year ban no questions asked. On my way out even! I violated the visa rules by a few days... No hard feelings to the Netherlands since I fought it and they lifted the ban and paid all my legal fees.... Anyway, if you google this in the past you might get a slap on the wrist or a fine on a first offence. Now the default is a two year ban.

One thing that bothered me about CHEK's coverage of the parade, was that it was not aired in HD. Come on CHEK! Get with the times!

For years one of my co managers lobbied our parent network to pick up coverage and broadcast across the nation to provide something different for a Monday day off for the nation and too make awareness of what this day off really was about, but it fell upon deft years on the programming genius of the time.

I still believe it could have generated a big audience outside of Victoria making it an annual event for many people across our nation and creating huge advertising dollars, which in turn would have had bigger names and more elaborate floats. etc.

Very nice parade, every year however the big gaps seem to get more frequent and longer which can be detrimental to a parade quality, once you get somebody in the parade zone you don't want to take them out, more discipline.

I think people sometimes underestimate the value/impact of a parade for a commercial business/other you become part of a person's outing/fun you're not just a nuisance you're what they came to see, they will remember you with joy attached.

........

.....elaborate floats. etc.

As always, we need to do better than this.

^ yeah what seemed to be happening was that some groups were pausing in front of the TV cameras to perform some act or were waiting for commercial breaks to end.

Watching the parade I noticed that as soon as the VicPD cars and acting chief came into view CHEK cut to a commercial break with a really short intro. I wonder if that was tied to any PRIDE protest or just a coincidence.

I've said this before.  We have a bloody national holiday with the same name as our city, we should be capitalizing on that.  We could have a tremendous thing.  If we would just think bigger.  The freakin' Calgary Stampede gets 100x more national coverage than we do.

Do you mean "deaf ears"?

And yes, the 10 worst/lame entries should not get invited back.  The Victoria Shamrocks/Slegg truck was one of the worst today.  They really phoned it in.  A huge flatbed truck just festooned with maybe 30 ballons.

You are correct on both statements!
