I agree. The first time I went to the parade there were huge gaps and people would get up and try to determine if that was the end of the parade or if there was more coming. It seemed to go on forever. If you closed up all the gaps you could get it down to a two hour max. Eliminate some of the sketchier "floats" and get it down to 1.5 hours. I haven't been back since the first time because it is just too long and draggy.

I think the parade is waay too short. We need more "merican bands and scooter drill teams doing figure eights for ten minutes, and waay more candies being thrown out. More horses, and cows to clean up after.

The parade should start at 6:00am with a mobile pancake breakfast along the route. Television should be Pay Per View to encourage people to get off the couch and see it live.

...mobile pancake breakfast...

I retract my previous assertions that there is nothing that would motivate me to attend the Victoria Day Parade.

In small towns they have parades that maybe go 30-40 minutes and the crowds are quite satisfied with that. Tie in a couple of other events and people may watch the parade then attend something else downtown and make a day of it.

Esquimalt's Buccaneer days parade is the best in the region and the Parksville Canada parade is the best I have been to on the island. Both much shorter and with events happening besides the parade to make a great day of it.

I used to enjoy the Oak Bay Tea Party parade but have not gone for many years. I don't even know if they still do a parade.

^Yes, the Oak Bay Tea Party still has a parade. I would describe it as a smaller, lamer version of the Victoria Day parade, with great long stretches of empty street in between the various entries.

One thing that bothered me about CHEK's coverage of the parade, was that it was not aired in HD. Come on CHEK! Get with the times!

I never caught the Victoria Day parade on TV. Oops. Oh well

The Oak Bay Tea Party parade is this weekend I think. The road closure signs are up on Oak Bay Ave.

Victoria day is not really celebrated or marked in other cities in Canada.
It is a stat holiday and even where I am now it was just like any other day off. No mention of anything to do with it.
The parade needs some work.
They need a parade marshal that knows how to keep the thing flowing.Nothing is more boring than sitting there waiting for 10 minutes for the next thing to walk or drive by.
The media booth and judging booth should be set up right downtown by View or Yates and Douglas where the highest concentration of viewers are and where those watching on TV get the feel that they are in a city and not in a crappy pothole covered parking lot

Agreed, History Buff. The television coverage outside of the TC offices makes an absolutely horrible impression on out of town viewers. After so many decades, have they not yet figured this out?

Well, either do we, really. At least not in the context of Victoria, or Queen Victoria. It's not like we have a replica of Queen Victoria leading the parade.

You actually believe that out of town viewers would be watching this?

I'm guessing their viewership for this event is a couple of hundred shut-ins who can't get up to change the channel.

Time once again for that age-old Victoria tradition. An event passed down from generation to generation: the broadcast of the Victoria Day Parade from the most barren, desolate stretch of Government Street.

Isn't it broadcast from the most barren, desolate stretch of Douglas Street?

^Maybe that was why the Government St. location was so barren and desolate.

I was watching from near the Sticky Wicket - got some decent photos. There was a really long gap at one point, just past eleven, so we got up to leave ... eventually figured out it was still going on, but by then we were committed to the idea of doing other stuff. It needs to be compacted a bit more :)

Yeah, if you want to see it "compacted" you have to go much nearer the start line. I am not sure why this parade gets so spread out compared to others unless maybe there are too many participants that stop and do a routine and then continue on, but now out of place. They need to do moving routines that proceed at the normal pace of the parade.

Thanks for the welcome, Mike :) I've only processed a couple of the photos I took (I had somewhat harsh lighting, so a lot of them didn't turn out well), but these two turned out alright:

I love the reference to shut ins. It took me back to old BC wrestling shows when the announcer would welcome shut ins around the province and as  young kid I just imagined what the heck one of those was.
