Christie's Carriage House Pub | Victoria | 1739 Fort Street

I'd say there's a lot of cross-over between Christies and The Penny farthing, and some between christies and ross bay, but there seems to be very little between the Fernwood Inn and Christies. I used to go when it was the george and dragon and I had friends in fernwood but both are now gone. I always got a slightly pretentious vibe off the Fernwood inn so I've yet to even go in as the prices are just on the fence for what I'd consider "over priced".

My go-to place though is still Barts/Doubles.

I hope who ever buys it doesn't ruin it too bad!  It's been my local since it opened.  I liked the george and dragon but find the fernwood inn a little pretentious and gentrified.  Penny Farthing and it's bad comically over-priced food doesn't even get picked up on the pub radar.  Although now that I've moved I'll be going there a lot less,  I guess Doubles/Barts is my new local!  I don't drink so all I care about is the food and clientele/atmosphere.

Yes, I rmember the Geaorge & Dragon. It was always our favorite place . They were very "nieghbourly" and supported Vic High students a lot. I also loved thier food and their Blues night was the BEST!. We spend many nights listening to some of Victorias best musicians who dropped in to play the blues. The Fernwood Inn is much more upscale and I like it but it doesnt seem so homey.

Nobody sane will buy it for that prove but people get kooky when they buy a bar vs a sports team vs a widget factory .

The interior is a bit beat up.

BC Assessment has it as a little under $2M

Plus the business, which I could see maybe 600k.  I agree the inside is a little run down and does need some work.  Regardless, its not worth anywhere near 5.7M, half of that at best

 

Considering how many empty restaurants I see at lunch and dinner, I would not be wanting to buy into the restaurant industry right now

This is so unfortunate. So you lost out on $15 in food costs and $30 in booze costs, Christie's. Is that a serious enough reason to start putting up photos of the individuals who may not even be aware that they are the focus of such an ultimatum? What if this was a mistake? What if one of the girls thought the other had paid? It happens and it happens a lot, and any bar or restaurant operator will attest to that.

Christie's could be a great place if only it would admit to being a pub and stop trying to masquerade as a restaurant.

 

Pet peeve: if it has a sign saying "Please wait to be seated" it's not a real pub. (and, sadly, Christie's are not alone in doing this...)

Is it a pub (meaning it has a pub license?) or is it a pub-style restaurant?  I was under the impression it's the later, and thus needs to sell food with the booze?

No, it's a pub.  I'm 50/50 on the wait to be seated part.  It's an effort to balance the load for servers.  But frankly they could likely handle that on the fly.

I'd 100% say it's a pub. But I don't care about waiting to be seated - I won't go back until they bring back the cajun curly fries. 

License-wise, Christie's was one of the first (if not the first) 'neighbourhood pubs' licensed in Victoria, back when neighbourhood pubs were a new thing.

 

But somewhere along the line they decided to run it like a restaurant rather than a stop-off-for-a-beer-after-work place, which is too bad.

My wife was the first group hired to work there. It was packed all the time and very much a pub. A late frien of my parents was the Architect who designed it, Tom Stark, good guy.
The main bartender, Mike is still there to this day.
We had dinner there last night and it sure wasn’t like Friday nights of old! It was busy but not lined out the door.
One of the reasons they put in the wait to be seated signs was they got busted by the Fire Dept for overcrowding. Which was a shame as the main pub area was great when it was standing room only just like pubs across in the UK

It’s not the same since Lynne Helm sold it.

it doesn't get close to the line, its over the line.  Look up the definition of criminal extortion.  A quick google confirms the owner of Christies who authorized it can get life in prison for it under the Criminal Code.  I hope collecting that $20 dine and dash bill was worth it!
