Report states bridge replacement for Massey Tunnel could be cheaper than anticipated

'Surprisingly, the potential savings of $900 million has not been widely reported,' the report states.

^ jeez. Think Horgan will eat crow and restart this project?

Also, whats the deal with Richmond? We have a Richmond guy here - why is Richmond so adamantly opposed to a bridge?

Not surprising that the one municipality in favour of the bridge would be the one to pen a staff report trying to garner favour for it.

I think a lot of Richmond’s opposition to the bridge centres around the absolute gridlock that it would create at the Oak Street Bridge. They also don’t like that larger ships will be able to access the Fraser River once the tunnel is removed, which will put pressure on farmland to be developed.

Richmond and Delta city staff have been writing contradictory reports about the bridge for some time now. It’s actually quite interesting to see.

A twinned tunnel would cause the same issue at Oak St.  As for farmland pressure, really? I don't see why they should be so concerned with that, given the ALR.

Here's a handy write-up from the City of Richmond: https://www.richmond..._GMTRP47903.pdf

The infuriating part is that clearly the existing tunnel is totally, 100% inadequate. Build a second tunnel, or a bridge, but get on with it.

Yep. An upgraded crossing is needed. I don't see any of those items in that document as deal breakers and many can actually be dealt with or will exist if you upgrade/twin/replace the tunnel as well. A lot of it is , boo hoo, some land use is changing. Its like, Richmond wants to be a quiet farming village...

Make a cut-cover tunnel all the way across Richmond, then they can farm over the cut.

Doctored sunny photos vs winter aerials from a different vantage.

Why do people try so hard to manipulate everything?

Wasn't the Big Dig the most expensive highway infrastructure project in the USA? Although obviously the geotech challenges of working in the middle of a large city are different than a filled bog.

Don’t forget it was 190% over budget and nine years behind schedule.

Methinks the bridge has died.

The main proponent, Delta, has signed a letter from five mayors and two FN chiefs asking the Province to expedite an 8-lane tunnel: 6 vehicle lanes and 2 transit lanes. There is no mention of refurbishing the existing tunnel. via https://www.citynews...el-replacement/

^ Bike and pedestrian infrastructure has always been part of the proposed replacement, bridge or otherwise. Bike makes sense, pedestrian not so much.

About time. It’s been what, a decade since planning began?

Now how about that Malahat?
