Black Friday and Boxing Day - a tale of two countries

Not meant to come across as a rant so I apologize in advance if its interpreted that way, and I'm certainly not judging anyone least of all on this forum; and I realize I am probably a dinosaur on the subject but this entire Black Friday phenomenon in this country frankly mystifies me: my question is this - why do we care in the Land of Moose and Maple Syrup?

For two reasons:

1.  Many shoppers esp. in border towns (most of Canada) see the deals, the advertising of Black Friday, and head on across the border to shop.  Our retailers are smart to try to counter that.

2.  As I've stated here before, why not tag along on that free marketing machine that is the US media?  We all watch it daily, we all know what Black Friday is.  Why not use that built-in awareness to market wares to Canadians on the same day?

I think the influx of american owned stores has also contributed to them carrying over the sales north of the border.

I still prefer boxing day though.
