Capital Iron

Cap Iron has a large selection of Lodge cast iron pots- one of the better brands of cast. Lodge is pre seasoned as well.
Has anybody seen a musubi press in town? Usually made of plastic, rectangle, used for pressing the rice and SPAM delicacy that is popular in Hawaii.

I'll deffintly check out capital iron. That's great if they sell fabrics and cooking stuff, that takes care of two things I don't have to look for. I don't mind paying more for kitchen stuff, but I cook a lot, and I literally donated almost everything to goodwill back in Nova Scotia, so right now I need to just replace everything, I'll worry about getting high quality later. All I brought with me is my aluminum angel cake pan and two skillets donated by mom, moms are awesome like that!

I should mention that if you ever need a complete kitchen for next to nothing, check out the Tuesday afternoon auction at Lund's on Fort Street. Sometimes they'll have the entire contents of a kitchen including the junk drawer all boxed up ready for bidding. I saw a box once that even included someone's powerful prescription medicine.

They also have nails, bolts, washers and nuts in galvanized, brass and stainless, as well as fine-thread - all that you can purchase by the unit. Three bolts, three nuts and two washers? No problem.

They also have split-pins and springs, and rubber grommets, O-rings, all kinds of stuff you can buy one at a time.

This is great about Capital Iron. Those damn box store packages have ruined the hardware store. Gotta love being able to buy just as much as you need.

Now is a good time to go there for rainwear.

And now it's open. Pretty big. Seems weird to not be shopping with creaking floors and well worn stairs to climb.

This is the most awesome store - they have Bormioli Rocco Fido glass jar gaskets (the real Italian ones)!

Is this a new Capital Iron building?  If so I wonder if it will house more than just their seasonal patio / outdoor stuff?  I think that merchandise is currently stored in those containers during the winter.   Also, what will they do with the empty lot that will be freed up?  You can see the Capital Iron sign and some of their patio furniture in the fenced area by the orange cones.

Since there is that newly paved access road, the lot that is currently used for their outdoor stuff could become their customer parking lot.

They were using it as an extension of the store this past weekend... had patio furniture and clearance items in there.

Hmm, go figure, I guess they changed their mind.

Capital Iron, the Store Street landmark that evolved from a ship-scrapping business in the 1930s to a retailer selling everything from cookware and clothing to hot tubs, tools and antiques, is shutting its doors permanently on Dec. 17.

 

The family-run general store with the slogan “there’s no store like it” has been a special place where generations of Victorians could find camping and ­fishing equipment, patio furniture and hardware or forage the ­basement’s treasure trove of nautical parts and pieces.

 

“It’s sad, it’s pretty raw,” ­co-owner Mike Black said Friday after a staff meeting.

 

In a statement, he said he’s closing the store with a “heavy heart,” blaming the pandemic.

 

“[We] have survived a world war and numerous recessions, but could not overcome the huge number of challenges that arose from COVID-19.”

 

The company will close its Langford location at the same time in December.

 

The Capital Iron in Sidney closed three years ago after the company chose not to renew its lease because of lack of space to display its best-selling items like patio furniture and ­barbecues.

CI has been going downhill long before the pandemic.

I wonder what will happen with the property?

I hear staff were given notice this past week.

More condos eventually I would guess. 

Capital Iron lost their focus years ago. They put themselves into direct competition with the likes of MEC and Bed Bath and Beyond while watching the regions largest Canadian Tire, Lowes, and Home Depot get constructed less than 10 minutes from their front door on the Westshore.

 

About 5 weeks ago, Capital Iron informed their long time credit and account customers that all Capital Iron accounts would be closed immediately.

In that notice to their customers, they accounted for this closure as a result of "staffing issues" ... but it seemed obvious at the time that something more substantial was afoot.

 

Capital Irons departure leave Castle as the only hardware store of substance in the downtown area. 

Upon receipt of the Capital iron notice regarding customer accounts, we wasted no time in opening a new account at the well stocked and well established Castle Building Supplies.
