The Pacific Sport Institute is a dream come true for local athletes – albeit a scaled down version.
Eager to get the project underway, Camosun College and Pacific Sport have reduced the $36-million project to $27.7 million to get local sports enthusiasts into the facility. The building will have two gyms instead of three and fewer classrooms. The cut-backs mean a stronger focus on the educational and training side of the facility. With only two gyms, the building won’t be able to host major events, said Liz Ashton, Camosun president.
The provincial government is kicking in $18.5 million to be supplemented by $11 million from the federal government. The federal money has yet to be seen, but organizers say that doesn’t mean the full project won’t be built eventually.
“(We) designed it with the idea in mind that at any moment we could (receive more funding),” Ashton said of the scaled down version. “We are optimistic that possibly (the money) could come through in the next budget.”
Saanich council approved the project in 2005. A four-hectare section had to be removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve so the land could be rezoned for industrial use.
Construction of the facility on the Camosun Interurban campus is scheduled to begin this month and be completed by June 2008.
