Yeah, we'll fix democracy by giving up on it.

I don't think that saying "none of the above" is giving up on democracy.

I think that we are getting what we pay for though. We as taxpayers complain every time a politician asks for a raise or wants to extend benefits and then we complain about the quality of the candidates we get.

Any executive of a mid to large sized organization makes double, triple, 10x the salary of an MLA. They would have to be nuts to ever want to take a big pay cut along with all of the abuse and privacy invasion you get as a politician.

I'd be curious how many people who are voting for any party are doing it as a 'protest' vote, rather than for actual ideological views or party leanings.

At the very least I think you should vote for the least of evils. Such as a candidate not too repugnant to you but with no chance of being in a government. I would vote Pirate before abstaining, myself. Fortunately I am happy with one of the main parties so I don't have that dilemma.

This is a valid point. And I may end up doing just that but as things stand now I know too little about fringe or independent candidates and need to do some legwork.

This is also why we ran a poll now, a couple of months before the election, and will run a second poll right before the election. It'll be interesting to compare the differences.

The present system doesn't allow that. Confusing not voting with voting for "none of the above" doesn't make them the same thing.

I'd support a "none of the above" option as a reasonable modification and slight improvement to the current system. But until we get that, not voting is NOT voting for "none of the above" and saying it is doesn't make it so.

If you decide not to vote Liberal or NDP, you could actually be helping one of those parties in certain ridings if it is a close race.

I think that's a lousy reason to vote for either. Members of my own party (NDP) will of course try to convince you that this is true. I never liked it and don't like it any more now. Vote your conscience!

I will hold my nose (and ignore my conscience!) and vote Liberal most likely. If the BC Conservatives can drum up a decent candidate before the election, I could be convinced to vote for them, but it seems unlikely at this point.

Really it boils down to voting for bad politics or bad policies. In this case I'll suffer the bad politics to avoid worse policies.

I honestly don't even know what the BC NDP's actual policies are. They're just the defacto "left" party so I throw in with them out of some primitive tribal loyalty despite the fact that they spout the same old neo-liberal policies as every other party just mixed in with some "progressive" talking points which they generally abandon once they have even a wiff of power to bend over for various powerful interests.

Oh, come on, I'm not giving up on it, I stated previously I've voted in every municipal, provincial and federal election since 1985.

I'm just skipping this one.

Voting some of the time is more common

Elections BC looked at voting patterns of people in the 2001, 05 and 09 elections using the actual list of who voted and the following is what they found

Voted in all three elections - 31.9%
Voted in the 1 or 2 elections the could have - 11.6%
Missed at least 1 election in which they could have voted - 30.1%
Did not vote in any of the three elections - 6.1%
Did not vote in 1 or 2 elections since registration 20.3%

Only 10% of the people that were registered for all three elections did not vote in at least one of them. 52% of the people registered for all three elections voted in all three.
