Let's see, one leg from View Royal to somewhere near the dockyard and one leg from Victoria View Road across to Ogden Point.  That'll cut down on the rush hour traffic.

Then again, maybe not. :whyme:

Hovercraft Park 'n Ride maybe, from Esquimalt Lagoon to the T.I.C.

I don't think that this is anything more than a PR exercise.

I don't know about anyone else but I bet I could walk downtown faster than one of these. & it only goes to Laurel Point which makes it kind of pointless imho, especially at $10/ride.

Gondola idea over James Bay just doesn’t fly, some residents say

Carla Wilson / Times Colonist
December 6, 2013 08:25 PM

A gondola system running overhead in James Bay?

No thanks, say some residents.

“It does not fit in with the dynamic of the neighbourhood at all,” said Ray Martinson, who lives at the northwest end of Montreal Street, one of the suggested routes of the proposed system. “I think most James Bay residents would concur.”

Although there is merit in trying to find an alternative to using shuttle buses to transport thousands of cruise ship passengers between Ogden Point in James Bay and downtown, the gondola proposal from Victoria Sky Ride Gondola is not the answer, Martinson said.

Joyce Martinson agreed, saying, “It would change the landscape.”

Dallas Road resident Chris Lougheed doesn’t like the concept, saying it would be a waste of money.

Brian Simmons, also of James Bay, said the structure “will present an esthetic eyesore. Simply hideous to erect this over a quiet residential area. Never mind the debris or clutter, and when it is no longer viable — who pays to bring it down?”

Victoria Coun. Pamela Madoff, a long-time James Bay resident and heritage advocate, said James Bay is an old community and Montreal Street is a narrow street with character homes.

“I just wonder if they [Sky Ride] have ever put a gondola through a 19th-century neighbourhood before? I also wonder if they are aware of how tight the physical infrastructure is in James Bay, where we struggle to accommodate pedestrians and telephone poles?’

After looking at Sky Ride’s illustration, Madoff asked: “How would people feel living on a third floor of a building having people going right past at that level?”

That's actually a good point. Undersea Gardens can be broken down, Wax Museum building gets new tenants--if this gondola goes belly up after a couple of years--what happens?

How can something that is NEVER going to get built go belly-up?

Can you tell what's wrong with Madoff's statement?

The TC deserves an award for excellence in reporting for that buffoonery.

A reporter with even a grain of understanding of the issue being covered would have never ever printed that comment or would have pressed the councillor to clarify why a godola traveling six storeys above the street would impact people only three floors up.

Obviously, (well, maybe not obvious to you) it will take a block or two to get up to the six storey height, and another block to bring the gondola back down to ground level. I think gumgum has a legitimate concern vis-a-vis observed ball scratching.

I'm fairly certain a gondola does not require a quarter of a kilometer to reach and descend 21 meters.

And it's also worth noting that the introduction of double decker buses meant passengers would now be looking straight into living room windows and bedrooms in houses and apartments. Unless gumgum lives on the sixth floor of an apartment building his morning antics have been a regular sight for transit riding commuters for years :)

I wonder how much money was spent on design work and related marketing costs up to this point. Alternatively, they could have spent about $20 going out for coffee with a few key community players and found out much sooner that this scheme had virtually no support. Time to shuffle this off into the "James Bay wacky attractions" section in the unbuilt Victoria file along with the giant ferris wheel and waterfront aquarium.

Hmmm, is there virtually no way they could make a waterfront route out of this?

0218-2004-0905-1015.jpg

Bah, maybe not.   My tram will work better.  My tram will run south of Dallas Road, to Douglas, then along the western edge of the park, and then it has to go down the hill to the bus station.  No return loop through James Bay.  Single track with about 5 sidings for passing.  It's single mid-route stop is at the commercial centre at Douglas and Dallas, so the timing for passing is pretty well coordinated.  My tram does not have overhead wires, it's powered by the "third rail" concept, like THIS

Or the Harbour authority ought to invest in, or work towards getting a private operator to get a decent sized boat to ferry people in, maybe about a 200 passenger vessel.  It whips from Ogden Point to Ship Point.

Another option would be to dredge the harbour and bring those cruise ships right in to Ship Point. :)

How anyone with even the slightest understandnig of the region thought this proposal would get past the NIMBYs in James Bay is beyond me.

^ Come on, be fair, one doesn't have to be a NIMBY to think this was a dumb idea.

Put a tram in, but don't have it go through the fictitious Dallas/Douglas commercial district - have it go through the actual James Bay commercial district.

A developer could have said he was proposing an invisible, silent high-speed gondola, that would have paid each resident of James Bay $500/year and I can assure you there would have been a vocal group against it.

I'm not sure that would get much more support, I'm trying to outflank the JBNEA so this can be done in my grandchildren's lifetime.

^ JBNEA doesn't like stinky tour busses.  Surely they would be OK with a quiet tram that they could also use to whip downtown?

The proponent of the project said on CFAX that the pushback from the JBNA was the worst he's ever dealt with in his many years doing this in many countries.

Now that's saying something.
