People doing grocery shopping at Walmart are not going to switch to whole foods. They might take a look but once they see the prices they'll walk out.

I think that's right.  I'm just a single guy, shopping for myself, so I don't take much note of prices and selections.  But my best girlfriend, mom of two, she simply only goes to Walmart and Superstore for food.

The Walmart grocery section will feel some pressure once Whole Foods opens.
After the demise of Target in Victoria I think the days of huge stores like Walmart are numbered.

You are aware that it's not Victoria that brought down Target, correct?

Poor execution all around brought down Target.  But we hear that some of that was orchestrated by Sears and Walmart, by buying up stock from suppliers and starving Target out.  So when Target finally opened and invited folks to their stores, shelves were bare.  That did not bode well for return shoppers.

You might also say that border issues brought down Target, they could not rely on their normal supply chains due to cross-border shipping issues.

Anytime you want to know which store has the best prices, look at the ethnic makeup of the shoppers.  Walmart, Fairway, Costco are filled with a multi-ethnic shoppers.  I'm not talking about just non-white shoppers.  If you go in to each store you will hear people talking in many european, asian, middle eastern languages.  Immigrants know where it's at for cheap prices and the best deals, as was the same for when my parents came to Canada.

I'm sure Whole Foods will be a sea of white shoppers.

At lot of ethnic people are more concerned with price than perceived quality.  That's a simple observation.  What's wrong with that?  You can see that in produce sales in Chinatown, or at Oxford Foods.

Just the entire "sea of white people" seems a bit backwards sterotypical.

Target failed from incompetence. They assumed Canada and the US were the same. If you cant get stuff on shelves, shoppers aren't going to come back more than twice. AKA "Zeller's disease".

And now those big stores have the rough economy to deal with.

I would argue that additionally, most immigrants are coming from countries where food growing standards are below or equal to that of north american "regular" produce, and so probably just scratch their head wondering why someone would throw 8 dollars at organic broccoli when the regular variety is, to be perfectly honest, pretty good as is.

... Hell, I don't see the point myself most of the time.

I dont think we need to worry about them. People still need basics and the big boys have the resources to cut prices to the bone until the dust settles. A family member had his biz suffer through half a dozen recessions and the strategy was "survive, when things come back half the competition wont be there".
I fear for the small businesses operating without much of a cushion.

Retail sales have been very good. People don't cut back too much on "big box retail" type essentials during recessions. They cut back on new cars, big vacations, furniture, home appliances, renovations, jewelry, etc. People will still buy bread and TP.

If you look at the used car market, it's relatively hard to find used vehicles from the 2008-2010 time frame due to the 'Great Recession'. Car sales fell that much.

I'll admit I'd never heard of JET until today.

Walmart has bought it for $3B

You can't buy using Canadian CC, Canadian billing address, or Canadian mailing address. So it's rather difficult to use it unless you have a full American bank setup, or a prepaid American debit/credit card and use a parcel pickup or forwarding service.

We need to fix our third-world status for parcel delivery, at the very least in our most urban centres.  I DEMAND that Vancouver gets the same treatment as Seattle.

Wal Mart makes a lot of sense.

I'm sure Canadian Tire and Thrifty's are going to love it.
