Greater Victoria public schools thread

it is a huge chunk of land and i always thought it would be a great area to put another school.. though i do have to wonder about selling it off and putting in the french school (is that a private school? if not why would they need to sell the land if a public sd61 school would be going in)  i'm also a tad concerned on how this will effect lansdowne  school... it would cut a huge section of the field away which with the size of that field wouldn't be the end of the world but would it effect the expansion of landsdowne school? currently the school is having growing pains, they cannot fit all the kids within the school for the grade 6 classes happen down the street at the old richmond building (what was shut down due to seismic issues years ago then became a school they used to place other elementary schools while they were getting upgrades) at some point the grade 6's should be part of the rest of the middle school

i knew it was a french only school (not immersion) i didn't realize they had their own separate district in BC

SD62 (Westshore/Sooke) is growing by about 500 students a year which is why you are seeing all of the new schools being built.  SD61 (Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt) helped maintain enrolment through International students which has obviously taken a hit with Covid. 

 

The question will be, what happens when International students return but capacity for them is no longer there?

rather than my PE teacher that is forced to also teach biology teaching me biology 9 by lecturing and writing on the chalk-board I think it would be better to watch lectures on youtube by really compelling and engaging experts.  then we can still have a classroom discussion and quizzes i guess.

well why don't we watch a tedtalk, then discuss?  that seems real reasonable to me.  rather than my junior highschool teacher standing in front of us and talking about a subject he does not really know so much about.

 

especially about topics like technology and economics - that she might not have studied closely in decades.

I think "video lecture" is the weak link in your idea. In-person teaching sinks in more. Better to just upgrade the curriculum. But I guess you're saying that never happens soon enough.

those kids should just feel lucky to even be able to attend school in person.

 

during WW2 we were not allowed to walk to school along dallas road in case the japanese subs could see us and figure out we were not port renfrew.

Truant kids were punished by having them run around the beaches at Port Renfrew with flashlights in each outstretched arm to simulate rush hour traffic.

I have never learned more in a short amount of time than I have watching YouTube instructional videos. Dozens of different topics, dozens of experts teaching visually that which they are expert on.

Before I bought a house I didn’t pay much attention to the how-to side of things, but now that there’s so much to care for, fix and buy/improve YouTube videos have become invaluable.

I guess what I’m saying is the weak link in distance education is a lack of experts who understand production value. And some teachers just stink, even in university, and they sure as heck have no idea how to create production value when teaching via video. Put someone who does in their place and the learning takes on a whole new realm.

for some families french is the primary language spoken in the household, and as we're a dual language country school has to be offered in both french and English.. not all towns and cities have enough primary french language users to dedicate a whole school to it (and then the kids take classes in immersion french) i do know that to register in a french school you need french to be spoken at home as a main language....
