This reminds me of the best corporate bafflegab that I ever read when E. B. Horrseman (electrical wholesaler) left town.

"In order to serve our customers better, we are closing the branch".

Yeah well when you can't even design a better site than realtor.ca you know you're doomed. It's a VERY low bar and they couldn't even get over it. I've often said that it's a miracle realtors sell any homes with that website. Here's a pro-tip : people are not searching for houses by map location.

Ya, it really is sad.

Speak for yourself, insane: I preferred and did a lot of searching using map location. I don't know street names or even all the neighbourhood names, but I had a pretty good idea of the general area I wanted to live in. So it was easy enough to filter my search by bedrooms and price, then use the map and hover over homes for sale in the area I wanted.

I've never looked at/used zoocasa but I'm with lanforod on the map aspect. I want to visually see what's available in a certain area based on search criteria. Most people have certain boundaries where they wouldn't live outside of. Realtor.ca has map functionality as well.

You are in the extreme minority. This is exactly why anyone serious has a pcs account.

^I also use the map function heavily. As anyone knows, "the only thing you can't change about your house is its location."

I would think that for most buyers the location would be of paramount importance. And talking with friends and family, I don't think I am in the minority at all.

The map function is the only thing I use the site for.

Interesting...

Closure of online brokerage Zoocasa sparks debate about real estate data

An online real estate brokerage known for its daily emails containing data on the selling prices of homes has shut down, several months after bowing to pressure from the Toronto Real Estate board to stop publishing the contentious data.

Rogers announced Tuesday that it is shutting down its brokerage Zoocasa, which served as a referral service for real estate agents, effective June 22.

The online brokerage used to send out a popular daily newsletter via email that provided the prices of recently sold homes in a bid to attract more traffic to its website.

But the company stopped sending the emails earlier this year after the Toronto Real Estate Board warned all of its members that those who break the rules about sharing sold data could lose their access to the Multiple Listing Service, or MLS.

Some industry observers say the closure demonstrates the extent of the monopoly that MLS has over Canada’s real estate market.

ZOOCASA is closing permanently June 22

TORONTO – Online real estate brokerage Zoocasa is shutting down as of June 22, parent company Rogers Communications, Inc. confirmed with Global News Tuesday.

“Rogers has made the decision to no longer to continue our investment in Zoocasa as the business is no longer a fit with our overall company plan, and core areas of focus. We will close down our website and mobile app effective June 22nd, 2015,” the company said in a statement.

An email sent to customers earlier in the day stated that although Zoocasa has “had great success” in the past two years, they have “made the difficult decision to close down” their business.

Doesn't surprise me one bit.  After pounding the pavement for 5 years and selling 300 properties I've come to the conclusion that there is just very little appetite in the market as a whole for alternative/lower commission business models.

This year is the absolute perfect example.  Single family homes in the core are flying off the shelf (they sell themselves) and yet the market is still 98% with the traditional brokerage commission structures.  Individual list their $800,000 Oak bay home to have it sell in a few days at a commission clip of $27,000+tax.  Last time I checked you can buy a have decent car for $27,000....?

The government/competition bureau really did their job five years ago by forcing CREA to open up the market to mere postings; however, the consumer hasn't done anything.

People complain about commissions, yet they continue to support the status quo....drives me absolutely nuts.

Goodbye Zoocasa.

You are in the extreme minority. This is exactly why anyone serious has a pcs account.

The reason serious buyers use the PCS accounts  (four times as many buyers use PCS compared to realtor.ca) is not about a better design than realtor.ca but because PCS offers so much information about the property (days on market, price adjustments, sale price, assessments, room measurements, features, school catchment areas, etc., etc.).  Realtor.ca offers none of this.

If realtor.ca offered all the information the PCS systems do then I think most people would use realtor.ca.

How common is it for Realtors to setup PCS accounts for their clients - or is there an easier way to get one?

PCS allows you to search based on features of a property vs a giant map too. Do people ask for a pcs version with an annoying map interface? No they don't.

Various realtors have sign up forms on their sites for free.

A lot of buyers ask me to set up their PCS system via a drawing map function on my end.  For example, they will only want to view properties in their PCS system East of the highway and south of Mckenzie.

I like the realtor.ca map function, there just isn't very much information displayed for listings.

And yet another site has sprung up. I found it searching the interweb, don't know how long it's been around, or why we need another one.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is PCS?

Private Client Services. Another service that pulls data from MLS (Multiple Listings Service).
