This could be a really nice addition to downtown. Something for locals and tourists. Good use of an underutilized space.

It is an appealing idea. Matches nicely with a really vibrant craft beer scene. Plays up the "British" element of Victoria that tourists seem to enjoy. I mean, it's not pygmy marmosets, but it should beat the B.C. Experience as a tourist draw.

Maybe they could have a huge relief map of Scotland.

I noticed that two upcoming events have moved to the conference centre, from where they used to be.

Colour the Pallett.  Was at UVic.

Souper Bowls of Hope.  Was at Laurel Point.

I know we have new people selling the conference centre space now.  I wonder if this is part of it, or if they have changed pricing.

Culinaire moved from Crystal Gardens to the main conference centre room and the event greatly suffered as a result. It was super tight, hectic, and you couldn't remain in one spot to try the food, you had to keep moving.

Oh, they scored the Vic Derman memorial on the weekend.  Never seen one of those there before, have we?

Do we not have a conference centre thread? Anyway, I sure don't like the changes to the entrance as envisioned here...

Some fairly significant changes proposed over all. I agree the Douglas Street entrance doesn't seem like an improvement.

It will be nice to see that semi-permanent tent replaced with a real structure. I am not 100% certain the addition integrates well with the original building though.

And that was before Bosa decided to build the residential building at the bus depot location, of course.

A residential development at the bus depot location would preclude an expansion of the Conference Centre?

In terms of the renderings above, yes.

I meant more in terms of a CC expansion in general.

I think they're having a hard enough time as it is filling the existing spaces they have.

I'd just like to see that hideous tent on the plaza removed for good.

Six storefronts on Douglas Street have been turned into art

While some window fronts house handbags and shoes, one on Douglas Street holds something a little more “squishy and pink.”

The Inside (we are all) storefront is one of six art installations from the city’s Storefront Victoria Exhibition Program, all of which are located in the 700-block of Douglas Street.

BOXCARSIX, a feminist artist collective made up of eight women from the ages of 30 to 60, are the masterminds behind the storefront.

i trust this exhibition is in the conference centre empty retail units.

Most of the retail component of the VCC was poorly designed. Set back in the shadows and stepped up from the sidewalk was always going to be a recipe for disaster.

Your tax dollars hard at work.

VCC art.jpeg

...Artists working with visual or new medias including but not limited to printmaking, fibre arts, mixed media, photography, video, light installations, and conceptual work were invited to submit applications for the City of Victoria’s new Storefronts Victoria Exhibition Program. Submissions went through a two-stage process. Artists were assessed on concept, execution and how their exhibit appeals to a diverse audience...

of course it was city funded.  we pay for the vacant storefront then we pay again for stuff to go in them.

I'm seeing a $250 honorarium per artist/team as the only tax payer dollars here. That's $1,500 total.

You guys need to find something new to complain about. Tax dollars should be used for things like this. There's a budget for arts and culture for a reason. There are a heck of a lot of taxpayers that actually enjoy public art installations.

Perhaps it's time to consider living off the grid? Don't really have to deal with the community aspect of living in a community if you do that.

I think you'd find quite a number of artists upset about the low rates of pay the City is applying to these projects, and they're boycotting them. The artist community routinely says these low-paying municipal honorariums serve to erode the pay scale for art.

As has been said again and again, if the basic duties of the city were being executed competently, I think we would be a lot more tolerant of this stuff
