A new angle on condo towers
The prow-shaped Silkwind aims to cut a striking pose on the Victoria skyline

Aquinas Corp. and Urbia Developments have created an unusual triangular design for their SilkWind condominium tower project, hoping to make a big impression on the Victoria skyline.
The 23-storey tower will be the tallest in the area, says Thomas Bales, president and chief executive of Aquinas.
"We envisioned a project that would become a landmark for the Greater Victoria area," Mr. Bales says.
By designing a triangular building to match the site shape, the project will offer unparalleled views, Mr. Bales says.
"The idea was to create something that gives the feeling of the ocean and billowing sails while taking full advantage of the wonderful unobstructed views of the Straits of Juan du Fuca, Olympic Mountains, Mount Baker, downtown Victoria and the Royal Colwood golf course, that this site offers," he says.
The 150 condominium homes at SilkWind have been designed to maximize the view with nine-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows.
The suites' interiors have been designed by Sandy Nygaard with cherry or maple cabinetry, plasma fireplaces, marble and granite countertops and engineered hardwood floors.
"We have spared no expense in the luxurious appointments of the suites," says Mr. Bales.
While Victoria has garnered great attention from second home buyers in Alberta, Mr. Bales believes that SilkWind is the perfect place for local and international home buyers, down-sizers and retirees.

The foundation permit has just been received and work at the site has commenced once again. A new marketing campaign is making its rounds, too.
So it appears as though the project is back on track.

Isn't anyone else extremely EXCITED about this building?! This is just as good as the Juliet!
Not really. This sort of density makes little sense in the suburbs. I would agree with you more if this same design had been approved and built downtown. This tower likely just means a whole lot more commuters travelling on an already congested road system. Unlike the Juliet, this building's location makes it anything but smart or sustainable.
