Ya gotta be a little careful here, "direct" in airline speak can mean you don't make connections and change planes, not necessarily flying without stopping. What you want is "non-stop"

My Westjet pilot friend tells me that this is all about asset utilization. As tourist traffic slows in the winter to Canadian destinations like PEI for example, they need to put their planes to work in other winter destinations like Las Vegas. This is similar to the cruise ship utilization of Alaska in the summer and Caribbean in the winter.

Great questions, everyone.

Here is the list so far:

Marketing the airport

- Does the airport have any budget, or plans, to run an ad campaign pointing out the time savings and convenience by flying from here, rather than out of Vancouver, Seattle or Bellingham?

- How much promotion and advocacy does the airport do that targets the south Island and Vancouver Island residents?

- Why is YYJ's annual passenger count so low compared to similarly sized cities in North America? Kelowna's airport is neck-to-neck every year with YYJ and Kelowna is a much smaller metropolitan area.

Flights and airlines

- Are any discussions currently taking place to add an additional direct year round flight with any of the following destinations: Los Angeles, Prince George, Portland?

- What are the prospects of additional domestic and U.S. non-stop routes from YYJ, and what are the actual target dates for adding additional routes?

- What has prevented, or slowed, adding carriers and flights operating out of YYJ?

- Will Air Canada Rouge operate non-stop flights out of YYJ? If so, when and to what destinations?

- Will the new super low-fare airline planned to operate out of YVR also offer non-stop flights out of YYJ? If so, when and to what destinations?

- Will an extended runway yield non-stop international destinations from YYJ?

- How soon after the runway is extended will carriers offer non-stop international flights out of YYJ, and at what frequency year-round?

- Are the airlines to blame for higher fare rates out of YYJ? The difference, especially for direct flights, can be many hundreds of dollars per passenger when comparing departures from YVR.

- Why has YYJ continued to shed so much air freight, year-over-year?

Airport infrastructure

- What is the status on the runway extension?

- At its ultimate length (after planned expansions), what will be the maximum size of airplane the runway will be able to support?

- At its ultimate length (after planned expansions), what will be the maximum flight distance eyed carriers utilizing larger aircraft will be able to provide?

- What regulations have prevented, or slowed, potential physical airport improvements?

- Please provide an update on the planned parking garage.

- Please provide an update on public transit (BC Transit) expansion plans.

- What is the possibility of introducing seamless integration between the BC Transit bus exchange and the YYJ shuttle, such as having the shuttle wait for #70 or #72 arrivals at the bus exchange?

- Are there any possible changes to taxi services/companies operating out of the airport?

- Any plans to 4-lane Willingdon Road from the McTavish interchange to YYJ?

- When will YYJ install proper equipment to handle foggy weather?

- Will YYJ stock additional de-icing fluids after the issues experienced in winter 2013?

- What feedback and input did YYJ give to the Ministry of Transportation regarding the future Beacon Avenue interchange?

ah, yes, I remember taking a "direct" flight to Regina on WestJest a few years ago that felt more like taking the bus....at least one stop, possibly two.... I would rather have to get off the plane and hang out in the airport for a couple of hours than sit in an airplane that is not moving (not keen on the small enclosed space).....

We'll be wrapping this up in a day or so and submitting the questions to Geoff Dickson of the VAA. If anyone has an additional question please add it to this thread and we'll be sure it is forwarded.

Did the opening of the Mctavish interchange have any effect on airport traffic?  What about airport user feedback?

Mr. Geoff Dickson of the Victoria Airport Authority has submitted his answers to queries by VibrantVictoria's members. They shed some light on many of the questions posed here.

Victoria International Airport “Q&A” with President & CEO Geoff Dickson
http://vibrantvictor...-geoff-dickson/

VibrantVictoria’s question-and-answer special feature with the president and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority answers a series of questions relating to the Victoria International Airport (YYJ) as posed by members of VibrantVictoria’s discussion forum. The questions focus on marketing the airport, flights and airlines, and airport infrastructure.

Victoria International is Canada’s 10th busiest airport and handles nearly 1.6 million travellers annually with over 120 daily flights to North American destinations. Mr. Dickson has spent 15 years in the airline industry, primarily in marketing and route development, and offers a unique perspective of the industry as seen through the lens of a carrier representative-turned-airport CEO.

A. MARKETING AT THE VICTORIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

1. Does the airport have any budget or plans to run an ad campaign pointing out the time savings and convenience by flying from here, rather than out of Vancouver, Seattle or Bellingham?

The airport advertised in the Times Colonist newspaper every day in 2013, promoting non-stop services from YYJ.  This was targeted primarily to mid and southern Vancouver Island.  We have not contemplated advertising spend in markets outside of Vancouver island as our budgets are not large enough to create impact.
