So one of the commenters is saying there aren't enough places to drink in Victoria? Am I reading that right?

They are saying there are no places for under 30's to go in the outlying areas.

Nor do many want to. If you want to party and you're 23 you're not going to have the same experience at a brewpub or a neighborhood restaurant.

Anyone who bought at the Falls without understanding that there were a couple of huge and hugely popular bars flanking them deserves zero sympathy from council.

I agree completely, but I suppose there is also a counter-argument. "Everyone who has argued that increasing density and having more residents would transform downtown can't really complain about the transformation..."

True, these complaints are bound to happen.

Of course this is an election year so perhaps politician's concerns over this issue are on paper only.

You could make that counter-argument if the whole downtown was a huge bar complex like the Strathcona Hotel.  I think development needs to be a little sensitive to existing uses.  If not, then buyers should be.

For sure.  I mean, who would drop that kind of cash without doing a tiny bit of research?  Would you buy in a complex without talking to a few of the current tenants?  Or if you are shy, get your Realtor to talk to a few.

I'm pretty sure I would not buy a condo without first talking to the occupants on either side, and above me.

Or just stay a couple of nights in one of the hotels.

Would you agree that development, such as the expansion of a bar, needs to be sensitive to existing uses, such as neighbouring residents?

No, not if it stays within the footprint of the existing property, that is already zoned for a hotel and bar.  They are not talking about expanding the hotel property.

The "new" Memorial arena has far more seating capacity than the old arena which of course has impacted the neighbouring area. I lived in the area before (and after) the expansion and have never been asked my opinion on the effects. I am not sure why residents of the area surrounding Bart's should have any more say in their matter.

This was about the only pub I could stand in town.  It was like the only place for OVER 30's.  Barts was fun and honest and filled with a nice mix of people, and nothing pretentious about it.   Double's next door was excellent too, very quiet.  No sports, no music.  The shared kitchen provided excellent food as well.  I'm really hoping what ever the "new" Barts is it doesn't become another soulless trendy over-priced downtown pub.

Double's was awesome. I too hope it's preserved in some way, but I hear they gutted the interior so it might very well take on the look of a typical hotel lounge no different than what you'd see anywhere else in the world.

Baro, Swans has an older crowd and both Veneto and Little Jumbo attract the 30-something crowd. And don't forget Clive's right next in the Chateau, definitely not a rowdy scene at all.

I still miss Hugo's in the Magnolia Hotel. That place was so awesome :)

I don't know, Canoe and Swans are both alright for 30+.

I'm confused. Wasn't it one of the complaints in the TC's comments, that there are no bars for the younger crowd?

The TC commenter said there were no bars for the younger crowd in the outlying areas, so they all come downtown.

I always found swans very crowded and the service extremely poor.  Very frequently we'd wait 20-30+ before we'd even get an order taken.  Maybe it's better now but I swore off that place years ago.  Also from what I hear the food prices are a bit high but good food.  Canoe has better service but I was always very unimpressed with the food and the prices (I understand you're mostly paying for the view) just rubbed salt into that wound.  The couple times I was dragged to clives it had one of the worst clientele I had seen.  Rich over-dressed businessmen loudly letting everyone within earshot know how expensive their drinks are and d-bags straight out of Jersey Shore.  It was actually pretty fun just people-watching there but god damn the prices.

Other places that attract a more adult crowd tend to be pretentious or expensive, or both.  Barts was awesome because it was cheap but because it was filled with old boomers and other "uncool" demographics it didn't appeal to the sorts of people I like to avoid.  Generally if a place is too cheap it attracts a bad crowd, but Barts was generally filled with normal decent people.  No over-dressed posers trying to impress anyone while at the same time no "lumpenproletariat" causing trouble or being gross.  And Doubles was just so chill, so quiet.  A group of us could just grab a booth in Doubles and spend hours talking and eating.  Such good food at such reasonable prices.  The cook has gone off to open his own place and has many of the same items, but the location and prices seem to say "tourists only" now.

Also Barts actually had a downtown patio that would sometimes get some sun.

Choice of restaurant/pub is of course highly subjective.  I just find me and my friends going out a lot less, and when we do it's either Argyle Attic or sometimes The Guild.  AA is usually pretty chill but you can never guess what will leak up from the terrible place below and the food can be very hit and miss, even the same dish multiple nights and the service can get so bad you think you're on a hidden camera show.  The Guild is pretty nice but it's a bit pricy and has a very handsome regular bartender.
