There was also Royalite which was purchased by British American also known as B/A which later morphed into Gulf. Don't forget Mohawk and Payless which were basically resellers or retailers.

I miss the old brands.

As a kid in Richmond in the 1970's we had Esso, Shell and Chevron (Standard), but also we had Gulf (taken by Petro Canada), Union 76 (taken by Husky), Home and Texaco (taken by Esso) and Pacific 66 (taken by who knows...) I may be missing one.

I know in Victoria the corner of Burnside and Douglas was a Union 76 station until the late 70's.

Soon it will be Co-Op only. Esso sold their stations in BC to 7-11 (still branded as Esso) and Chevron just sold theirs to Parkland
Fuel (will remain branded as Chevron)

As a kid in Montreal I remember Supertest (orange sign); White Rose; BA with a
circular red/green yin-yang sign; Texaco "the red star with the green T" as the radio guys said; Champlain which was owned by Charlie Trudeau, father of PET, and Fina, a Belgian outfit that appeared in the 50s.
Shell and Esso of course, but never saw Chevron or Amoco or Mobil (all offshoots of Rockefeller's Standard Oil that was broken up) unless we were in upstate NY or Vermont

why not?  in another thread i said nobody much cares about high density on busy traffic routes.  quadra is perfect.

 

here's a sample from "suburban langford" to go by.

 

 

it'd be shorter than a building across the road not far (50m?) at all south.

Save-On Gas in James Bay (Menzies Street) is now closed; the sign mentions a reopening in spring 2020, and I anticipate that there will be some renovations here (I recall that a prior rezoning request had asked for the addition of office space on this site).

The Cunningham family, who have been fixing cars and selling gasoline on the Saanich Peninsula for 98 years and through five generations, have pulled down the bay doors and shut off the pumps.

 

The station on the Pat Bay Highway near Elk Lake was sold to a Vancouver buyer this month who will redevelop the site into a Chevron station, likely by September, says the family.

^ Absolutely. Fantastic History. The Cunningham family lived across the highway from the gas station. Back in the day we would buy one or two dollars worth of gas for the jalopy there and then cruise the Tasty Freeze, Gas was 29.9 cents a gallon....a gallon!

 

We went to school with the kids and our kids went to school at Durance with their kids.

 

Two little known facts.

 

The Cunningham dad (can't remember his name) George? was a long distance runner and he used to run to Royal Oak and back along the Pat Bay Highway in the morning before work.

 

And my favourite ....the family would spend the entire year collecting and selling horse **** in bags in front of their house. Every winter they would take the whole family to Hawaii on the money they made selling ****.

 

The Oldfields (Prospect Lake), Cunninghams (Elk Lake), and Neufelds (the BA station across from Cunninghams) were the gas station families of rural Saanich.

where was the tasty freeze?  i think there was one at shelbourne plaza (shelbourne and cedar hill x rd.) back in the day.
