When was this? Could they potentially push themselves into vacancies instead?

The purchase was circa 2012, I believe.

The loss of the gym will indeed be a huge loss for the adjacent commercial centre. Gym patrons would routinely skip across the street to purchase groceries or a snack at the food retail spaces. The closure will be felt and felt hard.

Regardless of what Sun Life paid for the building, they can only rent it for what someone is willing to pay. From what I have heard, they have not been successful trying to market the existing space at the class A money being charged across the bridge.

Unless it's new ownership that don't want the old members thinking they can carry over their memberships.

It the plan was to open across the street it would seem strange to me to not tell your customers that when you announce that you are closing!

Wow. I get that it’s all in good fun, but 10k isn’t exactly a Sunday stroll, even if you’re walking it. No shock that Her Worship issues a challenge to other mayors barely three weeks out. God, she sucks.

oh, come on.  i think it's a real great idea.  frankly this run/walk should have 20,000 people.  it should be a massive signature event.  and it should start at 11am to allow more mainlanders to take part.

"Mainlanders", based on my experiences living there twice, for the most part could care less about what's going on here on Fantasy Island (my YVR friends' words, not mine), and Victoria particularly.

Vancouver already has two very high profile and internationally known events in the YVR Sun Run and Vancouver Marathon, respectively; in addition there are many other 'family fitness' events like the GLF one, geared to less and/or non-competitive folks.

Unless they have a good (family) reason to be here, the average person in the GVRD generally doesn't give this town a second thought, and is highly unlikely regardless to shell out the $ to come to whatever little shindig we might hold over here with gas and ferry prices hovering in the stratosphere.

the royal victoria marathon is made up of almost 20% off-island.

this run is a week ahead of the sun run it's a great warmup and a great off-season thing for tourism victoria to key in on. it should be a real festival. the infra is already in place. now build scale up.  each additional runner is a tiny tiny incremental extra run organizer cost but an off-island or up-island runner is big $$ into the economy.  even a 9am or 10am start would get more from up-island that would stay down for lunch./shopping. who cares about the locals. if we are going to incur disruption and policing costs etc. let's bring in more out-of-town bodies.

Most challenges are meaningless anyways. I didn't realize that she was a 10k and half-marathon runner though. I wonder where she gets the time to train. Tried looking up her results online to see how fast she is but I couldn't find anything.

she says in the article her pb is 52 minutes.
