The over-arching theme of sports in 2021, based on the vaccine timeline, is that winter and spring leagues and events are in trouble while summer and fall events stand a far better chance of taking place.

That is exemplified by the announcement that the 32nd Times Colonist 10K will be staged virtually April 16-25.

that and swiftsure two things killed more or less for 2 straight years. I guess junior hockey is in that boat too.

If the Olympics only feature Asian countries then 100%. 0% for anything more fullsome.

Best case scenario in Canada is 50% vaccinated by September and that is highly suspect. the WHO has already come out and said that global lockdowns should continue until everyone is vaccinated which will likely by mid-2022. Perhaps if any leader anywhere would be willing to publicly state the endgame I might be convinced otherwise.

The original Royal Victoria Marathon logo featured a crowned king running in robes. If it were to be revived, it might fittingly feature a picture of Michael J. Fox superimposed because the event is going back to the future.

It will again be titled the Royal Victoria Marathon, its name of 31 years, before it became the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon in 2011. Losing its title sponsor does not threaten the event, say organizers.

The biggest question facing the Victoria Marathon Society, following the 2020 cancellation due to the pandemic, is not whether the race will go ahead in 2021 but in what manner on Oct. 10. With all Canadians who want a vaccination likely to have one by the fall, live sports is projected to return by late summer and fall.

I really would not plan on things opening up by this October. A number of the EU countries are waking up to the fact that the vaccine is being shipped out of the EU instead of being used in the EU.

we do not need to get anywhere remotely near to “everyone” vaccinated to see a massive drop in deaths and hospitalizations.

No just 8,500

How are 8,500 people supposed to run on a track at the same time?

Why do they need to do it all at once?

that's the most effective way to slow down the earth's rotation.

To be fair I don’t like to run in the daytime and would probably collapse before I get to the finish line.

Well, it is a race...

And what is the other option, start 8,000 people in 10 min staggered starts on a track? Although to be fair, they'd be lucky to get 100 people to sign up for that.

Sure, let's do that, and not promote tourism to our beautiful city, and all the $ to local business', because some public roads might be closed for a few hours once a year.

You dont want to close down the roads to the bicycles, let them run indoors.

I think the concern is that you might get a disease.

Dutch long-distance runner Sifan Hassan broke the women's 10,000 metres world record on Sunday, clocking 29 minutes 6.82 seconds in a Continental Tour meetingon home soil in Hengelo, World Athletics said.

Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana held the previous record of 29:17.45, set at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but Hassan shaved more than 10 seconds off that mark.

that's quite something that someone can break the record by 10+ seconds.

anyway you are going to have to work a bit harder now if you want to beat that in next year's TC10k.

Registration opens at 10am for Royal Victoria Marathon’s in-person half-marathon & 8k on Oct. 10. The full marathon will not be happening until 2022 because it draws too many travellers, but runners can participate online with the virtual Royal Flush.

you have got to be kidding me.

Times Colonist 10K returning to in-person racing in 2022

After two dark years, the Times Colonist 10K will go live on April 24th, 2022, with registration now open at TC10K.ca.

The 2020 race was cancelled due to the pandemic and the 2021 event was held virtually. There will still be a virtual component, if that’s the way anyone wants to participate, but the big news is that people can once again form a ribbon of humanity pounding the pavement on the streets of the capital.

https://www.timescol...in-2022-4816393

Strange headline.  Hard to have a race that's not "in-person".

How does one win a "virtual" foot race?
