[Rock Bay] BC Hydro land | unknown | land remediated

This area is now full of 'new' contaminated soil again.

The next day you could see that most of the soil had been removed.

Good to know that there is no shortage of it.

Rock Bay Remediation Project. An extensive and complex decontamination operation is still underway to remove old hazardous material from the sea floor at Rock Bay. VAP's aerial and ground photos show how deep they are digging to remove and treat the contaminated area. We are also monitoring and documenting the progress of the remediation.

So they literally have to piece their way over all parts of the water and pump it out, dredge out the old soil and replace with new, clean soil! Aye karumba that is a big job.

Can't wait for this to be completed. I wonder where the pedestrian bridge might go if the seawall path (I have a hard time calling it David Foster Way) ever gets going?

Remediation has been going on for quiet some time. It was scheduled to be completed in 2016 where it will then be developed by the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nation.

Has anybody seen any conceptual designs? Given the City of Victoria is about to embark on local area planning for the Burnside Gorge Area, I wonder if/how this will be visioned.

They actually go well into the night on we days. It's nuts.

How about ear protection, working at home, or from Burmuda?

Have they drained the bay yet? I thought the cofferdam should be complete by now. Would be a great chance for an interesting picture from a seaplane...

I hope they end up tidying up the adjacent shoreline off of Bay St.

Contaminated Soil Removal Complete?

The usual MO for the blue Mercury barge has been to accept contaminated soil from the Rock Bay cleanup.  However, yesterday we had a delivery of what appears to be concrete boulders that are being offloaded to the site.  Is this a turning point in the cleanup efforts?  Is it now time to re-fill the big hole?

The massive, long-abandoned Powerhouse near Rock Bay where power was once generated to run Victoria’s streetcar system and provide the city’s early electrical needs is on the verge of a new life now that noted heritage developer Chris Le Fevre is working with B.C. Hydro to redevelop the site.

Hydro doesn’t have a use for the 20,000-square-foot building, and issued a tender to find someone to buy and fix up the two-storey structure built in 1892 and develop a financially viable plan for its future.

The good news is that the landmark building was well-built, constructed to withstand explosions. “It was built like a battleship,” Le Fevre said.
