do we still have no idea of Victoria or island deaths from the heat wave?

We’re still calculating sea levels. Give us a few days.

Know it all.

We’re getting pretty close on the sea level thing.  The oceans have been rising by about 3mm/yr.  That’s about a foot every hundred years.  In a couple of centuries we’ll have to seriously consider raising those boat docks at the cottage.

Deaths more than doubled on Vancouver Island during last week’s record-breaking heat wave, according to preliminary date from the B.C. Coroners Service.

Ninety-seven Island deaths were reported to the coroner between June 25 and July 1. The average for the same period over the past five years is about 42.

__________________________________________

Overall, the heat wave is suspected to have led to 579 deaths across British Columbia. A total of 777 deaths were reported in the province from June 25 to July 1 — nearly four times the five-year average of 198.

Just 25 big cities – almost all of them in China – accounted for more than half of the climate-warming gases pumped out by a sample of 167 urban hubs around the world, an analysis of emissions trends showed on Monday.

I suppose you all saw the incredible footage of the floods in Germany--but look at this from China today:

Subway passengers trapped in chest-high water.

What a nightmare.

Apparently the dam holding up the Xiaolangdi Reservoir in Henan, China could collapse at any moment. It's...uh...large.

That's a sexist headline. NBC says "waist high" and the 4' 10" woman in the subway is like, excuse me?

A group of demonstrators calling on the B.C. government to take urgent action on the climate emergency plans to block a major intersection in Vancouver this weekend.

Extinction Rebellion's Vancouver chapter plans to block the intersection of Main Street and Broadway on Saturday (Sept. 25) following a family-friendly event in Prince Edward Park.

The demonstrators will gather in the park at 3773 Prince Edward Street at noon for a family-friendly event offering art, music, and activities for children.

Ever since the glacier that was three blocks from my house melted 10,000 years ago I’ve been worried about this global warming thing.  The way things are going we’re going to have to move those picnic tables at Clover Point sometime in the next 400 or 500 years.  Otherwise water will be lapping over their legs and ruining all the family events down there.  It’s a worry.

“The impacts of climate change are being felt in View Royal just as they are across Canada and around the world,” the workshop’s webpage says. “Our community’s sustainability and prosperity depends on the decisions we make in the near term.”

https://www.vicnews....gy-next-month/#

I’d like to see the actual measurable evidence in View Royal. I suspect there is none. if there is it’s probably a net positive. Less space heating required.

A recent study on the global economic impacts of climate change by Moody’s concluded that Canada could be a “climate winner”: one of few countries that might benefit from a warming world. According to Moody’s, Canada’s GDP could increase by up to 0.3 per cent—about $9 billion per year—by the middle of this century. Other studies cite expanded farmland, increased economic productivity, and a decrease in cold-related deaths as potential benefits. Such findings have fuelled claims that investing in reducing greenhouse gas emissions here at home is a waste of money.

“June heat wave killed 569 people in B.C., coroners service”:  https://vancouversun...oroners-service

“It is now officially the third most destructive wildfire season on record in the province, after updated statistics showed more than 8,580 square kilometres of land has been burned so far in 2021… The worst wildfire seasons in B.C.'s history were 2018 (nearly 13,550 square kilometres burned) and 2017 (more than 12,160 square kilometres).”:

https://www.cbc.ca/n...ug-20-1.6147114

I don’t think this is evidence of BC being a “climate winner”.

how does that compare to heat deaths over the last century? it’s not significant. 100x more people died from heat in 1930 in BC, adjusted for population than this year.

BC pop is about 5.1 million now, and in 1930 was 676,000 (StatsCan). So 569 people this year translates to about 75 people in 1930. You're saying there there was 75 hundred heat deaths in 1930? You have a source for that?

British Columbia has introduced a plan to reach its legislated target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 with initiatives like slashing the number of kilometres driven by 25 per cent compared with last year and boosting the carbon tax.

The strategy announced Monday requires that 90 per cent of passenger vehicles sold in 2030 be zero-emission, with all of them required to meet that goal five years later as the province electrifies public transit and ferry fleets.

https://www.timescol...stry-1.24366157

25% less travel by cars?  they intend to achieve that through the carbon tax?

California:

Starting in 2030, California will require all light-duty autonomous vehicles that operate in the state to emit zero emissions. Signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday, SB 500 represents the latest effort by the state to limit the sale of new internal combustion vehicles with an eye towards reducing greenhouse emissions. In 2020, Newsom signed an executive order that effectively banned the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035. That same year, the state’s Air Resources Board mandated that all new trucks sold in California emit zero emissions by 2045.

https://techcrunch.c...datory-by-2030/

Washington State:

Washington State legislature has passed “Clean Cars 2030,” a bill setting a goal to require all light-duty vehicles of model year 2030 or later to be electric. The bill passed as part of a larger package directing utilities to prepare the state for all-electric transportation.

With this bill, Washington State becomes the first US state to pass a gas car ban legislatively (as opposed to by executive order), and now has the earliest gas car ban in the US. California and Massachusetts also plan gas car bans by 2035.

If 90% of vehicles will be electric inside of 9 years then why care about miles driven? Is there more to this than GHG emissions?
