That’s so bizarre. How’d that pass muster with the party?

Thanks guys.

That's just so very strange. That's certainly one of the most fossil fuel intensive vehicles she could have chosen to ride in. Why wasn't she riding a bicycle?

A more savvy politician would have seen the bad optics of this a mile away. I mean, it's bad enough she was in a gas car--but the Dodge Viper is one of the worst gas guzzlers by a mainstream American maker in automotive history. I'm sure there are lots of Tesla owners that would have loved the opportunity to show off their wheels.

The impression I get is that the waving politician section of the parade was supported by a local hot rod club so you basically took whatever car you were assigned.

Not the worst thing a politicians ever done but a red ball for the irony police.

This weekend, I measured the gas mileage in my Dodge Viper and received rather depressing results: Around town, it averages just 5.6 miles per gallon. And even when you're hypermiling on the highway, it doesn't top 18.6 mpg.

EPA Worst Gas Mileage for Cars, Trucks and SUVs
Two-Seater Cars
Range*: 15-36 mpg combined Average**: 22 mpg combined

Dodge Viper SRT 15 mpg

There was at least 1 Tesla in the parade as well as the electric car group.

Look, she's probably not a car person. I doubt she knows a Dodge Viper from a Porsche 911 or a Chevrolet Corvette. But she damn well knew she was travelling in a fossil fuel powered sports car. She damn well knew it wasn’t a 40 mpg econo box.

It’s just a bizarre thing to see from a politician* who says we need to wean ourselves off of “dirty”, “toxic” fossil fuels and advocates for an “orderly phase-out of fossil fuels”. But then again, she has said recently that we should be building more upgraders and refineries in Alberta, so who the hell knows what goes on in the mind of that fearless politician.

*Not just a politician, but the extremely vocal leader of the federal Green Party.

This could come back to haunt her in the next election. There are few things that could be more damaging for a Green Party politician than photos of her waving from within a Dodge Viper convertible. Yikes.

Yup don't know whats worse her riding in a Dodge or it being a V8... I'm not fussed about the V8 but would be seriously embarrassed riding in a Dodge!

Even if you take the kindest interpretation, that May simply showed up at the parade start and got into the car she was assigned, it still makes her look a bit clueless.

But you can never win at this game. She could have gotten into an electric Smart Car and some wag would have said, ah, a Daimler product! A company that used forced concentration camp labour during the war!"

I'm not sure if an average person on the street would come to that conclusion. But they certainly will wonder what the heck happened when they see photos of the Green Party leader riding in one of the most powerful mass production, gas-powered V10 sports cars on the planet.

The optics are not unlike a fierce anti-gun advocate who just got arrested for obstructing workers at a bullet manufacturing plant showing up at a country fair and happily firing off some AK47 shots. That's the scale of this misstep.

^Sorry, that's a terrible analogy. That gun scenario could not happen.

However, it's completely plausible someone wouldn't realize the Viper is an unusually bad polluter, especially in this age where sexy sport cars can be electric/alternate fuel. And yes, it's politically incorrect to mention it but being pedantic about a car's technical specifications is mostly a guy thing.

The hypocrisy of popular 'green' advocates is one of the sticking points for many people. If they don't practice what they preach, why should the everyday person do it?

Suzuki, Gore, DiCaprio...

Hey, don’t drag me into this! I have zero green credentials. I proudly drive around in my Green Go 1971 Dodge Demon 340, eating McDLT’s in the old styrofoam clamshell containers, drinking my Tab Cola with a god damned straw! #hotsidehot #coolsidecool

Don't know about you, but I get the impression there isn't much that won't pass muster with the party now.
