There was a great turnout for today's event...

It was absolutely packed when we were there.   Worked out great I think.  My favourite was the block of grass.   So much cooler than the asphalt!

It's funny, when I first got to the grass area I thought, man that's cool, Douglas St. has a grass median - I never noticed that before.  I said to myself, see all the cool stuff you can discover when you get to walk in the middle of the road.  Then I looked down and saw it was just rolled out there - but then I thought how cool it would be if Douglas St. was always like this.  Then I put down the crack pipe.

And in case anyone's wondering how I got all those way above other people's head shots - I put my Sony RX100 on my fully extended monopod and held it near the base above my head.  The camera was on a 10 second timer and was probably 12 feet off the ground.  Never done that before but it was pretty effective for this type of environment.

Looks great! About time Victoria got its arse in gear and loosened up a bit. More, please!

Car free day will be Sunday, June 19 this year, with 9 blocks of Douglas being closed (Chatham/Caledonia to Courtney).  Last year it was 6 blocks.

Any further details on Lisa Helps' dunk-tank activity?

So ironically on car free day it appears BC transit isn't exactly on board and fully in support as their schedule is radically cut back "returning to normal on Monday". One would think they'd be all over this event in support. A missed opportunity I think.....

BC Transit is actually one of the sponsors of this event. if I am not mistaken (http://downtownvictoria.ca/sponsors). I would imagine a number of their routes have been affected by the closure of 9 blocks of Douglas Street as well as part of Pandora.

No service has been cut back, but they admit that all their timing will be off.

The re-routing will affect transit service throughout the region on June 19: the online Trip Planner and schedules will not be accurate for routes affected.

It was packed. We were there at 11 and already swarming. Too busy to be honest, took off after an hour or so of crowding around.

+1

The layout needs to be planned better. Way to many bottlenecks along the route.

It's a great event. Not sure how to avoid the bottlenecks, but closing down all cross traffic would help.

It was crowded.  I think the big bottleneck was the beer garden in front of Shoppers.  Maybe next year close off Yates and put the beer garden in the section of Yates between Douglas and Broad street.

Some good bands were playing, especially the Ska band in front of the Sticky Wicket.

Ya, it was busy, Victoria people love free stuff.  Charge a $1 and there would be 95% less people.

Interesting comment from this guy writing to the T-C; seems to have some merit re: Government vs Douglas Street.

So why do they close the by far busier arterial (Douglas) when it would seem Government street would be the more logical choice and as far as I can tell still make the point and demonstrate the ideal of "car free":

I haven't attended either event, last year or this, but I can imagine vehicle traffic being pretty nasty on some of the alternative routes like Blanshard or Quadra.....

I think moving the event to Government would be to lose the entire point of things. I believe the message is meant to be that a major thoroughfare can be closed to vehicular traffic for a day and the world won't end.
