I agree the airport code thing is a bit odd. "YWH" for the inner harbour airport would be more accurate.

They should close the runways for a day and put down some grass and let people walk around.

YYJ might make more sense if the event was held in Sidney

Is it ironic though that YYJ the airport is going decidedly car-not-free, with a multi-million dollar expansion of its parking facilities?

The YYJ thing is a social media naming phenomenon that I guess old people don't get.

Anyone with any sense of social media skillz knows that airport codes are used as character savers.  I seriously doubt a single idiot went out to the airport for the closing (or opening?) of Douglas Street.

There's still time for you.  You're not old enough to dig a trench and reject this widespread usage.

Resistance is futile.  :(

What about married idiots or idiots in long-term relationships?

I bet a lot of people skimmed over the advertising and articles that said YYJ Street Fest especially if it's outside of Twitter land, opposed to if they said Downtown Car Free Street Fest. It's just bad marketing.  When I saw the title it was automatically pushed to the bottom of my priorities for reading about.

Wet-suit eh? That's cheating, the rules are speedo/bikini type contraption and get 10 normal bags of ice dump them in for safe measure.

Next year how about waterboarding?

How much to taser the mayor?

The vendor fees for Car Free YYJ have jumped once again this year to $100 for a non DVBA member, which represents the majority of vendors at the event. Food vendors will be charged $135.

The inaugural event was priced at $50, last year's was $75.

I know one vendor who has participated for the first two years but this year will be foregoing the event given the fee.

This is not a bad score for the DVBA, which will gross about $30,000 just from vendors.

The first two years of this event have been outstanding. I think the inaugural fee of $50 considering the foot traffic was an absolute steal. To double the size of the event and only jump the fee up to $75, was certainly reasonable, so no doubt going to $100 is fair this year.

Honestly, this event draws tens of thousands of people to downtown. If you can't manage to shell out $100 for that kind of visibility, you need to re-think your business strategy.

Most farmers markets/vendor fairs charge well beyond $100 a table and get a fraction of that crowd size. Car Free YYJ is easily one of the best deals of the year for vendors, especially the food vendors.

One of the best things this Council has done, and that's saying a lot.

It's on Saturday June 18th this year. I'll miss it for the 3rd year in a row. Always seems to coincide with vacation plans.
