Did Saanich News get the drop on citified with this scoop?

Sure did!

They would have bought advertising to promote the open houses, which would have been passed on to the reporters as a news piece.

The real goods will be when the new vision is released.

Do we have a unit breakdown per building? The original proposal had 360 and the new proposal has 528.

This will probably end up being a single level strip mall with a big surface parking lot by the time the locals are done debating it.

It has been changed quite a bit. Height is down and unit count is way up. Over 500 rental units.

It's no longer a concrete build. The amount of piles and caissons required to support the weight made it impractical. Now it's wood frame on a raft.

The complex is more outward-facing. There's more public space inside. A mix of studio, one, two, and three bedroom units. A significant affordable housing contribution.

The overall design doesn't strike me as being as interesting as the initial plan but it works for me.

The usual neighbour complaints about 272 residential parking spaces not being enough for 500-odd apartment units but I'm sure that's a good amount for a rental project at this location.

In other words it's been Victorianized or as I now like to call the dumbing down of perfectly good proposals, it's been "northern junked".

Anything on whether the movie theater would be retained?

^You know, I did not ask that. I did last time and I got a lukewarm "possibly" so I think the answer is no. They did have a "wish list" of prospective local and international tenants. Places like Discovery Coffee, Oak Bay Bikes or Russ Hay Bikes, White Spot,Bin 4 Burger, Save-On-Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs etc.

It does feel a bit "dumbed down" from the earlier proposal.

The thing that irks me most is the sea of 5-storey roofs. So boring.

I wish we could lose the fear of heights- if only to get some visual interest from a development like this. I'd gladly take an 8-10 storey "tower" here in exchange for some roofline interest.

From https://www.cheknews...heights-671222/:

However, one of the more popular amenities that will not be retained in the new development is the movie theatre.

“Unfortunately, the movie theatre doesn’t form part of the redevelopment plan,” Harris explained. “The movie theatre is in a location next to Home Depot and is sub-basement. So, when we bring down the existing mall … that movie space becomes part of the parkade.”

So that question is answered.

Via the I Grew Up In Gordon Head Facebook group discussion (https://www.facebook...81366615262567/)

I was at a site meeting last week with the developer. All the current tenants have to close by March 2021. Then demolition begins.
